DISPATCHES

05-21-08 LA CA: 2206 hrs. At the house, listening to some Yellow Swans. I thought I sent in the entry from last week in Vietnam but it appears I didn’t. I have been back for a week. It feels like a few days, it feels like a life time. I get swallowed up in the ritual of things when I am here. I have been getting up around 0400 hrs. and getting into the office soon after. We are well into the edit on the last Fanatic! book. It has a long way to go but I think we’ll pick up a lot of speed this week now that I am back. Last night I was on the radio live for the first time a long time, that was good. I am looking forward to getting some good shows on the air in the next few weeks. Monday night, I went to Capitol Records and checked out Brian Wilson perform his new album for a small live audience. His press person got me into the event. The songs were really good but what was the best part of the show was the talent of his band. They are just ridiculously talented players and they can all sing and when they do the group harmonies, it’s one of the most amazing live performances ever. The other thing that stood out was the arrangements of some of the songs. Wilson is still a talent to be reckoned with. It was inspiring to see him so involved with it all, singing on all the songs and having things so together. I felt very lucky to have been there. There’s a lot of history in that building. When you think of all the sessions that happened in that place, it’s fairly staggering. The photos on the walls there are amazing, Coltrane, Sinatra, Keely Smith, etc. I didn’t know that Zappa recorded Lumpy Gravy in the studio we watched Wilson and his band perform in. That will be the 2nd time I have seen him play this year.
