DISPATCHES

06-14-09 LA CA: 1451 hrs.At the office. Los Angeles is in the depths of what is known as “June gloom.” The skies are overcast more often than not and after awhile you start to think that LA actually has some weather. It won’t last for long. Soon it will be back to the relentlessly cheerful, cancer causing brightness and heat. I wish there could be at least one overcast day a week here. Last night’s radio show was good, that is to say, we got all the music played. That’s always my main concern, getting enough music out there. That’s one fast two hours. On the way back into Los Angeles, I came up withideas for next week’s show and sat here until I had it all finished. I forget which odd hour of the morning I was done.I spent a good deal of last week on set in the world of Sons Of Anarchy. It’s good work and they feed us very well. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of it.When not on set, I have been here in the office, getting things done and trying to keep up on current events. The Palin / Letterman thing was interesting as it played out. It wasn’t Letterman’s best gear but it wasn’t mean spirited and Ms. Palin can’t put her kids onstage and use them for props all campaign season and then not expect some blowback from that. It’s the fact that she and her dull husband are trying to make news out of it is what’s interesting to me. Not all that much though, the complaining of these Alaskan backbenchers is mere background insignificance when compared to the real issues in the world.I don’t know if you have any interest in what’s happening in Iran but I do. For many reasons and I must say, I was very disappointed with how the election shook out. I can’t be sure but it seems like there was some lessthan honest counting of the votes. Also, the crackdown on journalists, protestors and opposition politicians makes for a pretty dismal picture. I had high hopes that Mousavi was going to win by a decisive margin. It could very well be that he did. I think it’s safe to say that another four years of Ahmadinejad will slow down progress for American-Iranian relations. I was hoping for something better. Apparently, Mousavi will appeal the outcome but I can’t see anything substantive coming from that. If you check out the headlines in the last 24 hours, it’s going from bad to worse in Iran. It’s almost as if the ruling party is using the post-election uproar to unleash the beat down they have been wanting to dole out for some time. Media outlets are down, internet down, cell phone reception is out. It seems when anyone wants change in the world, there are enough people to keep things grinding along the old way. And then to make it worse, there’s Mitt Romney insisting that president Obama was on an “apology tour” of the Middle East recently. Romney was on ABC today, saying that the election results in Iran are an example of Obama’s failure. Come on man, you gotta get better stuff, especially whenyou’re a draft dodger. I am checking out the new Iggy Pop album at the moment. Interesting and at times, very poignant. I got a copy of the new Dinosaur Jr. album as well, really good. I am looking forward to their LA shows. I am going to bothof course. Until then, I am here, working away on a television show, plotting further radio insurgencies and enduring The Drill ™.Thanks for reading this. Henry
