Fanatic! I think the holiday season means different things to different people. I didn’t see any humans today and the weather was unseasonably warm, so it was more of an overcast September atmosphere. Some of my neighbors light their houses up. It looks like a lot of work. There is a car I’ve seen twice in the last few days that was wrapped in Christmas lights. The car was white, and the lights were multicolor and at night it looked really cool. The first time I saw the car, It was ahead of me turning onto the highway and the second time I saw it, the occupant was getting out to go into the gym as I was getting into my car. I wish I could’ve gotten a photo.

I can’t possibly know if you have any days away from your usual tasks as we march towards the end of the year, but if you do, I hope you get some good listening in. I’ve been checking out the Velvet Underground reissue box set, a lot of Stooges, David Bowie and tracks for our upcoming shows. Engineer X and I are a little over halfway done with our first show for next year. I think it’s going to be a great one.

I believe I mentioned last week or the week before, there are some really great records coming out next year, a few of them. I’ve been lucky enough to receive in advance. Others, I’ll have to wait for, but they will arrive eventually. I think we’re going to have some great listening coming up.

Fanatic, we finish another year of music appreciation together. On behalf of myself, Engineer, X and Engineer Am-Rock, thank you so much for tuning in. We hope we’ve put together shows that have been interesting and worth your while. We are going to do our Fanatic best to maintain this level of sonic good times into next year.

Until then, enjoy the holiday and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week and if you’re one to celebrate the holidays, I hope you have your travel plans in order. Many tours I’ve been on would end right before Christmas. It makes sense, there’s not a great deal of activity around that time. It would be right around now, I’d be looking at a multiple plane and airport experience. More than once, for some reason, the last show of the year would be in Moscow. I would hit the stopwatch as I walked out of the hotel lobby and stop it when I walked in to my house. As I remember, it was almost 24 hours. So many times, on this day, December 19, I’d be on a plane with hours and hours to go. The airports would often be full of families and inexperienced flyers.

Fanatic, I think last week I told you about that really cool Velvet Underground 5LP box set that was just unleashed by the great Sundazed label. My copy just arrived and I got right into it. My schedule will be one LP a night until I cycle through all five. I had not listened to the first Velvet Underground album in his entirety for a long time. Partway through the first track, Sunday Morning, it was almost as if I was five songs into the album. It was so completely immersive, perhaps due to the sheer amount of times I’ve listened to it. Just my opinion, but I think the album is an example of pure genius. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything like it. Easily one of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard. As I remember, my introduction to the Velvet Underground was administered by brainiac and all-around good guy Chris Hasket, who I was in a band with for many years. One night myself and many of the microscopic DC punk scene were at a show at the legendary Madam’s Organ. I think the Bad Brains and the Teen Idles might have been on the bill. Things would often start pretty late there. It wasn’t always so much of a show, but a party with bands playing now and then. As the show was letting out, Chris suggested that some of us follow him to his place. My car loaded up with people and several minutes later we arrived. We were hanging out in Chris's room and he put on a record. It didn't make any sense to me. He told me it was the Velvet Underground and the album was called White Light/White Heat. I remember hearing the song Sister Ray, and not understanding why a band would play a song for that long. I didn’t dislike the record, I just simply didn’t have a place in my mind to put it. A few years later, I heard the first Velvet Underground record, which I liked immediately and then revisited White Light/White Heat, and somehow understood it differently and really dug it. In early 1983., I got a copy of  the book Uptight: The Velvet Underground Story by Victor Bockris and Gerard Malanga. As I remember, it was very compelling and made me want to hear every record that was mentioned. This book inspired me to listen to the solo albums of Lou Reed, John Cale, and Nico. I loaned the book to someone and never got it back. It was one of two books I loaned to this person. I got the other back, but it took years. Anyway, we’re playing a track from the first Velvet Underground album tonight.

Tonight’s show will hopefully be a mixtape that hits the right notes and keeps you engaged for the entirety. We are almost done with 2025 and if all goes according to plan, we will be charging into 2026 with our usual Fanatic zeal. Engineer X, Engineer Am-Rock and I are now putting the finishing touches on next week’s show and should have it ready for you on time.

We hope you survive the holidays in safety and optimum health. Be careful out there and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I had a chance to listen to the live Boris album Pink Days a couple of nights ago. So far, there was a very limited pressing of it on their website that sold out immediately, and then a larger pressing the band has been selling on tour. I have no idea as to the status of those. I believe the band has completed their North American dates and have headed back to Japan. Unfortunately, for now at least, copies online are expensive. It’s too bad. It sounds so good. I hope Boris will have mercy on people who do not want to pay exorbitant prices and press up some more. I was lucky, my good pal and sonic ally, Fanatic Denise snagged me one at the merch table when she saw them play recently. She’s done this multiple times over the years as I can never seem to find myself in the same city as Boris. Anyway, I hope you get a chance to check it out sometime.

You have a life and things to do, so you might not know this: David Bowie’s amazing album Heroes has been bootlegged and pressed in different colored vinyl. There are a lot of variants. If you want a visual, here are a few.

https://www.discogs.com/release/9125793-David-Bowie-Heroes

https://www.discogs.com/release/10439789-David-Bowie-Heroes

https://www.discogs.com/release/19145542-David-Bowie-Heroes

https://www.discogs.com/release/23008037-David-Bowie-Heroes

A few years ago, these were everywhere. I found eight different variants, including a picture disc. They sound a lot better than records like these usually do. Quite often bootlegs of official albums like these, (and there are plenty of them) use a digital source, like a CD. You can hear it very quickly on the vinyl. There’s a shallowness that’s unmistakable. I find the bootlegs more interesting than the official releases. When I found them, they were really cheap. Last night, I listened to one of them and was surprised at how good it sounded. It’s such a great record. My personal favorite album of David Bowie’s is Scary Monsters. All that Robert Fripp guitar, so high up in the mix. It’s a purposefully in your face record. That being said, I think Heroes is Bowie’s best, as far as composition, execution and the sounds. A serious meeting of the minds on that one: David Bowie, Tony Visconti, and Brian Eno. Wow!

I watched this documentary about David Bowie again last night. Really cool.

A really great record you should be aware of. The Real Janelle by Bratmobile has been out of print for a long time. It’s just been reissued with The Real Janelle tracks on the A side and Bratmobile’s Peel sessions on the B. It sounds great.

CD/Dl here: https://bratmobile.bandcamp.com/album/the-real-janelle-the-peel-session

For vinyl, I saw a lot of them on Discogs. I didn’t see the vinyl listed at the Kill Rock Stars site.

This box sure looks good to me!

There’s a new  Heather The Jerk 7” called the Very Motorcycle EP. The vinyl is gone on Bandcamp.

You can still find some copies on Discogs.

Fanatic! There was a bit of snow in my neighborhood today. I just got a bag of raw shelled peanuts, and left some out on the back porch for the squirrels early this morning. A little while later, I returned to see they were all gone. Hopefully, I’ll help keep their food supply happening so they can get through the winter.

Fanatic, this is our first show for December. We’ll be featuring songs from David Bowie’s excellent Heroes album. Such an amazing piece of work. I hope you had a chance to avail yourself to some of the Raw Power-era tracks of the Stooges from those records I suggested to you recently. I’ve been checking a few out every night for the last couple of weeks.

I got a chance to listen to the tracks that will comprise an album by an artist we listen to quite often on the show that will hopefully be released next year. It’s not for me to get in front of a band’s release, just remember I told you we’ve got a great record to look forward to. Also, I was given all the tracks for the new album by the great band from Hong Kong, David Boring, called Liminal Beings and Their Echoes. We have to wait until January 12 to play any track we want but if you go to their Bandcamp page, you can check out two songs now. This is a really interesting band and I’m looking forward to getting into these tracks next year. https://davidboring.bandcamp.com/album/liminal-beings-and-their-echoes

We’ve got a track from a cool band called Caution in the second hour of the show. I got the heads up about this group from our good pal and sonic ally, McGinty. The album comes out today. I’m looking forward to getting into the rest of the tracks.

I just got a chance to hear a test pressing of a project Larry Hardy at In The Red Records and I have been working on for weeks. It sounded great and a week ago, we made the order. When the records get to us, I’ll definitely let you know. I think you’re going to like this one.

Fanatic, I’ve given this set of tunes the run through on multiple days on the treadmill, and I think we’ve got a good show for you tonight. Wherever you are, whatever the climate is, whatever you’re going through, we hope you dig all the songs we’ve gathered for you. Have a great weekend, a great night of listening and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week and weren’t subjected to unwanted holiday intrusions.

The first memorable Thanksgiving I can remember was in the year of 1980. I was working at a Häagen-Dazs ice cream store on Wisconsin Avenue in a very upscale section of DC called Georgetown. My boss, Steve, gave us the day off. Being the budding overachiever and workaholic, I told him I’d have the shop open from 10 until 4, just in case people needed vanilla ice cream for their Thanksgiving dinners and if there weren’t many or any customers coming in, I would do cleaning, organizing and other tasks to stay busy. He probably thought I was knocking myself out a bit too much for minimum wage, but perhaps appreciated my zeal and abundant intensity. Fanatic is as Fanatic does, I say. As I remember, we got a fair number of customers that day. The part I wanted to tell you about was that Steve had a restaurant down the street from the shop prepare a Thanksgiving meal and bring it over to the shop. I had no idea it was coming. Being low on finances and perpetually hungry, it was a good break.

While I reject the images of indigenous peoples of the North American continent, grooving with European invaders, as depicted in paintings, I don’t mind the occasion to be thankful. I went to Sprouts and bought another bag of raw walnuts and laid them out in great plentitude for the two gangs of squirrels that run around in my front and back yards. They were all gone a few hours later. There are so many critters around here, I have no idea who made them disappear, but hopefully they were enjoyed.

I’m thankful for too many things to list here, but since we’re on the topic of tonight’s radio show, I’m thankful for the slot at KCRW. Honestly, I’m always surprised that we keep not getting fired. You never know with radio. I’m thankful that there’s so many great bands committing themselves and making such amazing music. I’m thankful that you tune into this show. I’m thankful that Jason Bentley sometimes sends me boxes of clothes he no longer needs so that I can have something to wear.

The new Party Dozen track that starts our second hour is really cool. You can find it here.

Just my opinion, Fanatic, but I don’t think this band has made a record that should be missed. I can’t wait to hear the flip side of this record.

Have a great night of listening to the marvelous mix we have prepared for you and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope the week was not too bruising and that you had the occasion to check out some great music. I’ve been getting some good listening in. It’s around this time of the year I start listening to a lot of Raw Power-era Stooges. What I mean by era is there’s a lot of music the band left in their comet trail of fury from 1973 into the first two months of 1974. There was of course the album but if you drill down deeper, there’s a lot more to check out. Hopefully, you won’t mind this short list of releases featuring the band live and at practice. Absolutely blistering.

The Stooges – Rubber Legs

The Stooges – Heavy Liquid

The Stooges – Rough Power

The Stooges – California Bleeding

The Stooges – Theatre Of Cruelty

The Stooges – You Think You’re Bad, Man? (The Road Tapes '73 - '74)

The Stooges – Born In A Trailer (The Session & Rehearsal Tapes '72 - '73)

Please note, there is a tremendous amount of overlap on these records, especially when it comes to the practice sessions but I think they’re all worth checking out. I’ve been listening to selections from these for the last several nights. I think it’s some of the best Rock music ever made.

I found this record by Keiji Haino and Shuta Hasunuma called U TA to be super cool. We have a track from it in hour two. I found anything involving Keiji Haino is worth checking out. He is always 100% committed to the moment. https://shutahasunuma.bandcamp.com/album/u-ta

The Post Pink album by Den is really cool. We have a track from it on the show tonight.

You might remember Fanatic, I’ve been telling you that I had no information on the American Lips On Strike! album. Our good pal, sonic ally Sebastien generously gave me the 411.

American Lips is:

Adrian Popovich - guitar, synth, voice

Jessica Bruzzese - bass, voice

Sebastien Grainger - drums, some voice

I play drums, co-produce, mix, do some writing and play some odds and sods on this project.

Label: Ancient Fashion (my little label with Adrian)

The record came out October 29th and is available at DSPs and on vinyl at Bandcamp!

What a fantastic-o lineup of tunes we have for you on this Friday! I thought that we should floor it for the first few songs, just to make sure you’re in a wakeful state and ready for the nonstop barrage that follows.

Speaking of Bed Maker, they have a show tomorrow night in Washington DC at Comet Ping Pong. With Sensor Ghost?! No way! I wish I could be there!

Fanatic! I hope November’s been treating you well. I’ve been supplying the two crazy squirrels in my backyard raw almonds for most of this year. Up until a few weeks ago, they seemed quite happy with them. One of the squirrels, not seeing any almonds scattered on the back porch area would come up to the window and bang its paws on the glass, reminding me that I have to supply the demand. For the last few weeks, I’ve been leaving almonds out, thinking the squirrels might need to bulk up for the winter months. I’ve watched them, day after day, walk right over the almonds. I did some research and found that squirrels are very careful about their diet and after awhile, might back away from the almonds, unless they bury them for later. Well, then, I’m going to have to find something else to give them. Later: I switched to raw walnuts, and the squirrels are eating them.

I just finished listening to the In The Red album by the great Australian group the Prize. We’ve been playing tracks from the band on the show, but I just had a chance to sit and carefully listen to the record all the way through. It’s really good. https://theprizemelbourne.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-red-usa

Very cool band on the great Damnably label called BB Bomb. We’re checking them out in the first hour. https://bbbombband.bandcamp.com/album/practice-songs

You might notice at the beginning of our second hour, new music by Ekko Astral. Hopefully, there’s more to come. https://ekkoastral.bandcamp.com/album/horseglue

The new album by Black Eyes, Hostile Design, just came out on Dischord. There’s a lot of FCC unfriendly language in the tracks and I don’t need the aggravation of trying to excise everything so we’re going to give the record a miss for the most part, but it should be checked out, absolutely.

The Morwan album we’ve been listening to over the last couple of weeks, Vse Po Kolu, Znovu, is really worth checking out. https://morwan.bandcamp.com/album/vse-po-kolu-znovu

You also noticed, that we’re listening to another track from that excellent Kid Congo & TNDE album Live @ St. Kilda . I’m sorry that we didn’t get into it more completely when it was first released. It’s so good and a great example of why you should never miss an opportunity to see Kid Congo.

I just did a couple of podcasts with my longtime pal Paul Rieckhoff. If you wanna listen to them here they are.

Episode 372 - It’s Time to Bring Back Punk Rock

Episode 373 - On Venezuela: Show Me the Dope

I think we have a great mix of tunes for you tonight. I take the tracks to the gym with me and listen as I plot endlessly into the future on the treadmill, listening down before we subject you to do the same. It’s very helpful for final edits. It’s a multi-day process, but I think it’s worth it. I like what we have here and hope you do as well.

Thank you so much for tuning in, have a great weekend and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! Here we are together again for our second Friday. I hope you dug last week’s show and are okay with our new time slot.

Before anything else, I think I need to clear something up. Last week I told you that I went up to DC and mixed some tracks with Ian MacKaye at Inner Ear Studios in beautiful Arlington, VA. The tracks we mixed were not a collaborative effort, besides the mixing itself. I am not on the tape. Ian is not on the tape. Neither of us are on the tape. What we were working on was a demo, recorded in 1979, by a legendary Punk band that recently came into my possession. I had the tape baked and transferred by the very capable Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound in Nashville and had him send the tracks to Ian so he could take them to Inner Ear and get them loaded in. The mix came together quite quickly because it was only eight tracks on one inch tape and the quality of the sounds were so good out of the gate, very little had to be done. The performances are fantastic. Ian and I played the mixes over and over days later and kept in touch to see if either one of us had any notes as to anything that needed to be changed and neither of us could find anything wrong with the work. I contacted a member of the band and asked if I could release the tracks. I got permission and started preparing the tracks for release. We sent the final mixes to Pete, who mastered them and they’re really good. I’m going to be working in collaboration with Larry Hardy at In The Red Records and we’ll be releasing the demo as soon as possible, as a four song 12”. You might already know that Larry and I have been putting out very cool and often extremely rare tracks on 7” and 12” records over the last few years. In fact, we have a great one at the pressing plant right now. Once it’s back, I’ll tell you all about it. It’s super cool.

So Fanatic, October is several days behind us. I wanted to take advantage of the changing of months to put some cooler weather listening into our program tonight.

I really hope you like our first track in hour two by the band Morwan. Their new album on Feel It, Vse Po Kolu, Znovu, which transliterates into “all in a circle, again” is really different. It struck me much the same way as my first listen to the David Boring album Unnatural Objects And Their Humans. Very good and very memorable. I really hope you like the track we’re playing tonight.

A lot of new music in our show tonight. Bandcamp is your friend for finding out more information should you find yourself interested. I got my first listen to the Loose Lips Last Laugh album a few days ago and think it’s really great. The new Lorelle Meets The Obsolete album is also really good. Just my opinion, Fanatic—there’s not one record LMTO ever made that should be missed. If you just connected with them one or two records ago, their back catalog is absolutely worth diving into.

I think we’ve struck a great balance of new and old and a subtle shift from our October programming tonight. I hope the new time slot is fitting in with your weekend activities. If not, there’s always the archive. I know that change can be difficult at times. I must say, I’m quite excited about being on Friday nights.

Thank you so much for tuning in. We very much hope you enjoy the show. Have a tremendous weekend and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! Check out our new time slot. This has been in the works for quite a while. As you might know, there’s been some changes at KCRW. This is a brief article about what’s been happening.

https://www.dailynews.com/2025/10/20/kcrw-cuts-10-of-staff-amid-funding-slashes-djs-jason-kramer-jeremy-sole-and-jose-galvan-exit/

This newly implemented schedule allows us to have one more show in October. So, we decided to make it fun with quite a few tricks mixed in with the treats.

We’re stoked about being on Friday nights and look forward to starting off the weekend with you. If this time slot isn’t working for your schedule, please check us out on archive at the site.

Years ago, I told someone that because of the misery of high school, Friday turned into my favorite day of the week. It was the beginning of 48 hours away from the gulag. The person I told this to explained that this sentiment was probably felt by every single person who ever endured school. Oh. Nonetheless, it’s still my favorite day of the week. The challenge for me has been to make the weekend stand up to the expectation I weigh it down with. Sometimes, thinking about it, anticipating it, using it as an incentive to get through some of the more excruciatingly mundane tasks of the rest of the week is better than the actual time. It was for me to make the weekend as great as I thought it could be. I’ve been able to achieve the proverbial great weekend with some consistency by listening to a lot of music. Obviously, there’s myriad destinations of happiness, and whatever works for you is the one or ones to go with. For many years, music has been what’s made the weekends memorable for me. When I’m able, I plan ahead, down to the exact records to be played, records to be looked at and records to be thought about and written down to make sure they get played later. Also, thinking about places. As I’ve no doubt worn you out over the years, my thoughts while the music is playing on a weekend night, often go to where I first concluded that somehow, music was going to be a big part of my life, even if it was just going to the record store, listening to music or checking out a live show. Whenever I have the opportunity to visit Washington, DC, where I come from, I try to go to as many of my favorite landmarks as I can. It’s a lot easier to think of these places than to actually be there, so I do my best to remember the last visit. A few weeks ago, I was afforded a couple of days walking around in the old neighborhood in the great autumn weather. Those memories have been with me for the last few weeks.

Weeks ago, I journeyed it to DC in order to work on a great project. Ian MacKaye and I went to Inner Ear Studios, where we made our first records decades ago and mixed a four song session with the great Don Zientara at the board. This is the same studio, where the Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and many others recorded. It was amazing to be back there with Ian and Don. Part way through the mix, none other than Eddie Janney, he of the Untouchables, Rights Of Spring, One Last Wish, Happy Go Licky, Skewbald and other great bands joined us. The session benefited greatly by his presence. As to the tracks, I had them mastered several days ago, and I’m now working on the layout and design for the record. When it’s ready, I’ll let you know. We are extremely excited by this one.

We’re honored to be able to bring you a weekly show, and beyond grateful to be able to keep it happening, year after year. We’re looking forward to bringing you super cool music on Friday nights—the best night of the week.

We hope you enjoy tonight’s gathering of tunes and the stories that accompany many of them. Thank you so much for tuning in. Until next Friday, keep the jam session going and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! You might remember, last week I asked you to check the show notes for tonight. I just wanted to tell you that Larry Hardy at In The Red Records and I have another cool record at the pressing plant. We think you’re going to like this one. I’m not exactly sure when it will be back, but it won’t be long. When we have possession of them, I’ll let you know.

Also, I’m going to be putting up an announcement late next week, having to do with our show. So, if you can, please check out the site for the announcement, I’d say Thursday.

Also, I wanted to tell you that Ian MacKaye and I recently mixed some tracks at Don Zientara’s Inner Ear Studios. We mastered the tracks with Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound and will be pressing them onto vinyl soon. It’s going to be a great one. When I have more news about a release date, I will let you know.

Fanatic, we have what you will hopefully fine to be a tremendous gathering of tunes in the mood of October. And what would that be, exactly? Well, I’m glad I asked me. In our first hour, we will celebrate the month of months with bands and songs that, if you’re a listener to this show with any regularity, you might have become somewhat familiar with. As Thomas Wolfe, the great writer from Asheville, North Carolina once said in his book Of Time And The River—October is about returning.

In our second hour, we’ll put some newer tracks into the mix. I’m already getting notices from some of our favorite labels, that there’s quite a bit to look forward to next year. I space. I’ll be getting album downloads very soon and of course will bring the music to you when the labels give us the green light. Definitely some great records on the way.

I hope that wherever you are, you’re enjoying October. Have a great weekend and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic. I hope you had a great week of autumn weather and excellent analog playback. If you’re a fan of the band Boris, there’s a chance the new edition of their album Pink has arrived in your mailbox. The 6LP and 2LP variants showed up at my place yesterday, as well as another Boris reissue, Dronevil. As you can perhaps imagine, both albums were released in different colors, predictably, sending fan folks scrambling. I saw one of the 6LP sets on Discogs for a mere 499 USD. Wow!

I think I forgot to mention this last week, but there’s a new album by Automatic called Is It Now?. I’ve played it once and will get back into it soon. We’ll start tracks from it, hopefully, in a show or so ahead. https://automatic-band.bandcamp.com/album/is-it-now

The new Snooper album, Worldwide, is great on vinyl. If you get a chance, check out the hype sticker on the cover. No way! https://snooper7.bandcamp.com/album/worldwide

I hate to complain, but the price of records seems to have spiked over the last several months. There was an album I really wanted to get, pressed in the USA, but I just couldn’t justify the expenditure of 30 USD. I’ve heard some of the tracks and I think you would like this band, and I would like to listen to the vinyl, but for now at least, I can’t do it. Maybe I’ll just have to adjust. I was looking for a download of the record, so I could at least get the tracks to you but so far, I haven’t been able to find one. I’ll keep looking. I hope this isn’t the start of something, to where vinyl becomes so expenditure-heavy, that people give up on the medium.

In our first hour, we listen to tunes you might find familiar if you’ve been listening to this show over the years. Every October, I try to come up with a concept to honor the great month and of course to keep things as compelling as possible. If you’ve noticed a pattern over the last few weeks, you might see that in the first hour, we go for the familiar and in the second hour, we attempt to mix it up a bit.

Kiss guitar man Ace Frehley has passed away. I met him in New York years ago, at Carnegie Hall. It was extremely cool to converse with a true Rock legend.

Not a few hours ago, Engineer X and I put the finishing touches on our show for next week. Life does not hand out many guarantees, but hopefully the tunes will please you no end.

We hope you like the show we’ve prepared for you. Thank you so much for tuning in. Until next week, stay Fanatic.

Fanatic! What a show we have for you tonight. The Misfits going right into David Bowie to start us off completely works for me.

I hope you’ve been enjoying October thus far. I’ve been doing my best to keep up with all the new music that’s coming in, as well as revisiting old favorites as I like to do in this month.

Snooper’s excellent new album Worldwide came out last week and if you mail ordered, it should be arriving about now. I think mine landed yesterday. Definitely going to get that one spinning as soon as possible. Here’s the Bandcamp info: https://snooper7.bandcamp.com/album/worldwide

Here’s information on that excellent new Kid Congo album Tucson Safari.

https://intheredrecords.com/collections/store/products/naim-amor-and-kid-congo-powers-tucson-safari

The new Guerilla Toss album You’re Weird Now continues to be a super cool listen. If you like the track we’re playing tonight, the rest of their catalog should be checked out without hesitation. I dug them the first time I was lucky enough to connect with their excellent music. This is a great band.

The Grouper album Way Their Crept is getting a 20th anniversary reissue. Any record Liz Harris releases should be checked out. She’s never anything less than full on.

Fanatic, if you look below, you’ll see a gathering of tunes that was selected specifically with your great enjoyment in mind. I took both hours to the gym and over a couple of days, plodding away on the elliptical treadmill, it sounded like a good mixtape to me. Hopefully, you’ll find the jams to be worth your while.

October is an amazing month! If you're located where you can actually see and feel seasonal change, I hope you get out there and breathe it in. Whenever possible, make time for music. Lots of it!

We very much hope you dig tonight’s show. Thank you for tuning in and picking up on this brave NPR signal. Have a great weekend and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! It’s our first show for the month of months. Fanatic October has begun! I’ve been looking forward to this. Last night, I went to see Snooper play a show to celebrate the release of their new album, Worldwide. This was the third time I’ve seen them and they were great. There’s hardly any breaks between songs, just this hyper-onslaught of tunes. The new album is really good and it came out yesterday. https://snooper7.bandcamp.com/album/worldwide

John Dwyer texted me a few days ago, as he does now and then to check in. As a joke, I asked him, “How many records are you going to put out this week?!” John, choosing his words carefully, texted back, “Two.” I thought he was just humoring me.

The new Upchuck album, I’m Nice Now just came out and it’s really good.

Brendan Canty, the incredibly talented musician and all-around great guy, sent this short feature on the Ruts and Ruts DC to Ian. We watched it and I asked if he could send me the link so I could pass it on to you. Here it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ATiMIG4fNg

If you check our second hour, you’ll see we’re listening to a track by Ron Rude. The guy has an interesting story. https://www.punkjourney.com/ron-rude.php

To start our first show for Fanatic October 2025, I thought it best that we commence with my favorite Damned song. A B side! I’ve never heard a live version of this track. Actually, it was a tossup between the Damned and Wire, so I put them next to each other.

I’ve listened to both hours twice now, and I think we have a good balance. I hope you think so and enjoy tonight’s programming. We finished the work on next week’s show two days ago. I’m looking forward to you hearing it. But before that, we’ve got this cool batch of tunes to check out.

Thank you so much for tuning in, have a great night of listening and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I had a chance to listen to some records.

As I’ve told you too many times, I listen to seasonally and September I could be back into Joy Division records. I’ve been playing a bootleg live recording every single night this week and it’s been great. Unfortunately, postage and tariff hassles have made getting things from other countries a bit more involved than they used to be and a lot of these live albums are stuck in Europe or Australia. As far as good Joy Division bootlegs, may I suggest the band’s second-to-last show from April 19, 1980 at the Ajanta Theatre in Derby, England. It’s a great set list, featuring songs from Closer, and the band tears it up. You’ll see it listed under different titles, such as Dead SoulsBeginning Of The EndThat’ll Be The End, and Dance To The Radio, which seems to be a new pressing, and not having heard it, I can’t vouch for its sonic integrity. This one just happens to be my personal favorite, but the Malvern Winter Gardens show is also great as is the University Of London show. I’m no expert by any means but I’m a fan and I think those are really good. At the end of the day, any live Joy Division is worth checking out.

The new Snooper album Worldwide comes out on October 3. It is so good.

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. We have a great show lined up for you tonight!

While not completely on the topic of music, I was hoping you might indulge me, nonetheless. For the last couple of days I’ve been talking with members of the agency L.E.A.D., otherwise known as Law Enforcement Against Drugs & Violence. https://www.leadrugs.org

They had a table next to the gym I go to and I’ve been having some very interesting conversations with them. Yesterday, I warned the young man at the table that I was in no way trying to frame him as being naïve, but more patiently optimistic and asked him if he thought a citizen-energized agency could make a difference. His answer was incredibly inspiring. He said he was the son of a preacher and simply believes in the goodness of people, and that no one wants to see children bullied, or in any way harmed or endangered by the prevalence of drugs and violence. He said he believes that by standing out amongst people and talking to anyone who would listen, that they might be inspired to contribute and hopefully do some good. I thought that was great.

I asked him, besides gun violence what was the danger to school age people. He said drugs, and specifically, fentanyl. He related something that was told to him recently: someone was brought to the emergency room, apparently overdosing. They gave this person four doses of Narcan, which I’ve never heard of, but then again, I’m not a doctor. Thankfully, the person was revived, but it was only after tests were done that they found out this person had taken a new, synthetic form of fentanyl that the Narcan was less potent to combat. Again I’m not a doctor, but this stuff sounds incredibly dangerous.

He told me about something that happened to him recently that blew my mind. He said he was in neighborhoods, looking for contributions and came upon a man standing on a corner. They got to talking and the subject of fentanyl came up, and the man grew nervous. He asked what he could do to help. The L.E.A.D. staffer told him that they were looking for $300 to meet their goal for the day. The man walked to a car and came back with the money in cash. It seemed a bit odd, so the staffer asked him why the contribution was in cash, and why it was in his car. The man said he was a fentanyl dealer. I commented to the staffer that it was in a way, blood money. He agreed and said the two of them had a conversation about how this bad money had been recycled. I asked if he called the man out on the danger he was creating by selling this stuff. He said yes, but ventured that he probably wouldn’t be stopping. He also said that a couple of days before, a woman came up to him and started crying. He asked her what was wrong and she said she’s been clean from fentanyl for quite a while and then had sadly relapsed earlier that day, and that she was high at that moment and heartbroken that she had fallen back. He told me they held hands and prayed for about 10 minutes while her boyfriend sat in their car and yelled at her to hurry up and get back in.

Something I try to do, as best I can, is when I’m out amongst people and meet someone, I pretend that something awful happened to them the day before and conduct myself accordingly. Maybe there’s been a death in the family, maybe they lost a job or something isn’t going well. The point I’m making is everyone has issues and all humans, no matter how they might portray themselves, are incredibly complex. Anyway, I went to the website and made a contribution, and I am glad I did.

So, music. I got my first listen to the new Guerilla Toss album that we’re featuring a track from tonight. It’s so good! https://guerillatoss.bandcamp.com/album/youre-weird-now

It looks like there’s finally a release date for the Kid Congo & Naim Amour album Tucson Safari. It seems to be October 11. Here’s a cool video for one of the tracks.

Fanatic. I hope your September has been grand thus far. I started my September listening with Scary Monsters by David Bowie and Pink Flag by Wire.

This is pretty cool. There’s yet another release by the duo of Mark Robinson and Trevor Kampmann, otherwise known as Uncomfortable Police. This time around, it’s a 7” called Hazmat Kat. There was only 100 pressed. Here’s the information.

https://uncomfortablepolice.bandcamp.com/album/hazmat-kat

Bruce Loose, vocalist for the legendary San Francisco area band Flipper has passed away. Luckily, I got to see them play many times. Every performance, in its own way, was kind of amazing. Quite often, Flipper would be in the opening slot, going on before an audience who had a fair idea of the band’s predictable unpredictability. No matter what happened, like the night they played The Wheel for the entirety of their set, or when they brought on a horn player who didn’t know how to play, it was always memorable. Flipper were easily one of the most, if not the most uncompromising band I can think of. A good record to check out Flipper by is Sex Bomb Baby.

We’ve started our first show for September with the Mira and Ginger track Oh! September quite a few times. I think it’s the perfect track to roll into the autumn season.

May I make a book suggestion? If you are a fan of The Fall, this is a great read: You Must Get Them All: The Fall On Record by Steve Pringle. I believe I’ve recommended it to you before, but I’ve been rereading it and the sheer amount of information is incredible.

You might know that Larry Hardy, owner and operator of In The Red Records, and I occasionally find rare or unreleased music and put it on vinyl. So far, we’ve done this with the Ruts, Pure Hell, The Gun Club, Ruts DC, Alan Vega, the Panik, and most recently, the Adverts. I wanted to let you know that we just approved the mastering on a new record and we go to press very soon. This one is going to be really cool. When we get the vinyl back, I’ll let you know.

Tonight’s show will hopefully usher in Fanatic Autumn 2025 and augment your weekend listening. I’ve got a few new records to check out, but I’m fighting the urge to listen to Perverted By Language by The Fall and Another Music In A Different Kitchen by Buzzcocks.

Fanatic! In this broadcast, we bid farewell to summer and with great enthusiasm, run at Fanatic autumn with all speed. Please enjoy our final Charles M. Bogert track of the year. Depending on where you are, you might already see some signs of fall. Some trees in my area are starting to shed their leaves, even though the heat is considerable.

Next week we start our autumn programming. Engineer X and I are putting the finishing touches on our first Fanatic September show right now.

There are some great records coming out in September and October, a lot to look forward to, as well as a lot of old favorites to revisit.

We hope you had a great summer of listening, and that our show provided a worthwhile expenditure of your time.

When I was younger, this weekend was the pits! It was always the following Monday that school started. I dreaded it.

Have a great weekend and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope you got some records played since last week. I did. Last night I listened to a Damned LP that I haven’t played in well over a year. It’s a bit of a barrel scrape, called The Chaos Years 1977-1982: Doom The Damned!. You can go online and check out the tracks. Audio quality is all over the place, but I found it to be a surprisingly good listen, especially as August is exiting and we’re getting ready for September.

Did you check out the Boris Pink album reissue variants that went on sale a few days ago and were gone almost immediately? I was one of those people, refreshing the site over and over again until it was go time. I was able to score a copy of the six LP box set version. Too bad we have to wait all the way till October to hear it. Looking forward to this one. Thanks to Fanatic Denise for the heads up on this one.

Now that the bands have announced, it’s okay to tell you that the new Guerilla Toss album, You’re Weird Now is really good. We’ll be starting track soon. Also, the new Upchuck album. I’m Nice Now is great as well. We’ll start tracks from that in coordination with the release date.

Some great records to look forward to

Guerilla Toss – You’re Weird Now

The Osees –  Abomination Revealed It Last

Upchuck – I’m Nice Now

Black Eyes – Hostile Design

Sheriff Lindo and the Hammer - Ten Dubs That Shook The World (heads up from Michael Mulholland)

Snooper – Worldwide

The Prize – In The Red

Some cool records to check out

Eraser – Hideout LP

Shepparton Airplane – Forecast (heads up from Michael Mulholland)

Our good pals and sonic allies, Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe are putting out their third album already! It’s called Liminal and you can hear a track from it right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dokGhdZp844

You can get the record here: https://brianeno.lnk.to/Liminal

Will start tracks from it on October 11. Cool!

Fanatic, a great batch of tunes we have gathered for you tonight. We hope you enjoy them. Have a tremendous night of listening and STAY FANATIC!!!
