Fanatic! In an air plane, 8h 11m into a 13h flight from Sydney Australia to Los Angeles. I flew all the way to Australia for a show and of course, some record store action.

Due to jet lag and the blur of activity, as I sit here, I’m unable to remember a single title of what I got at Strangeworld in Melbourne. All I can say is that it sounded good at the time and I’ll know more when I get a chance to get the vinyl spinning.

As you probably know, Australia is in its winter, so the nights were quite cool. So strange to leave the blazing desert heat of Los Angeles to exit the plane into such a different climate. It’s currently Sunday, 1745 hrs. in Sydney. If all goes according to plan, I should be back in LA by 0600 hrs. Sunday.

I think besides a three day stop to do some press on my way back from Japan years ago, this five day and a few hours trip might be the shortest one I’ve made to Australia. It was a long way to go for a single show but it was worth it. Australian jet lag will make this coming week interesting as far as sleep cycle but I should be able to even out in a few days.

Remember how I’ve been telling you that there’s a lot of great records coming out in the next few months but it’s not for me to be breaking the news? Well, there’s yet another great one that’s coming out that I’ve just been sent the advance on. I’ve been plugging in tracks from it into our upcoming October shows.

Please enjoy this substantial stack of tunes we have lined up for you below. Next week’s show is already prepped and ready to go. I hope you’re getting a lot of music played, wherever you are.

Find the shade and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! Watching in real time as the kids are getting pulled out of the cave in Thailand. Hopefully by show time, there will be even more good news.

Hot weather listening! A couple of nights ago, when it was over 100F, even at night, I felt like I was baking in an oven. Over this whole weekend, I think I’ve slept about 8 hours total.

I listened to a different Minor Threat bootleg LP for the last three nights running. What a band.

Next week’s show is ready! Until then, we hope you dig this one.

You can listen here.

I was introduced to their music recently and became a fan on first listen to their In Time LP. I’ll start getting tracks from Origins into the show soon.

J Mascis at McCabe’s tonight.

Fanatic! A special show. It was all Ian’s idea. He thought it would be a cool idea for he and I to recount the time Black Flag went to the UK in December of 1981. Ian came along on that one. Not the best time but it made for some great stories.

When Ian was out here for Coachella this year, he came by one evening and after Engineer X had got the mics going, Ian and I basically told the stories to him. EX took the tracks with him back to his studio, got it all edited and sent it in to KCRW.

Thanks to Ian for coming up with the idea and making the time. Thanks to Engineer X for keeping us within the confines of the limitations of our two hour broadcast. Thanks to Engineer Am-Rock for getting from the station to you.

We hope you dig the show!

Go analog whenever possible and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! So behind on listening to records. I’ve been working two shifts a day finishing a book. This one will have around 400 scanned images. It’s amazing how the hours just slip away. I’m almost there. I’m in year two of getting the text together. Almost 100 thousand words came from notebooks and I’m not the world’s fastest person on the keyboard, so I’ve been dragging notebooks with me all over the place and typing from Manila to Lima.

Months ago, I got the 2LP set of outtakes from the Fun House sessions by the Stooges. I finally got a chance to play it two nights ago. I knew it would be great but it exceeded all expectations. Sounds fantastic and the choice of tracks is perfect. If you’ve been thinking about this one, I wouldn’t hesitate.

Last night, I listened to the reissue of Lodger by David Bowie. Even though I have other pressings of this record, I was curious as to what had been done to it. I didn’t get the chance to hear the pressing that came with the big Bowie box set last year as I returned it. I hate to be a downer but I can’t not warn you. This pressing of Lodger, at least on my system, sounds mired in low mids. I don’t know what the strategy was in the mastering.

We have a great show for you this week. Next week will be super cool. Ian MacKaye and I will be swapping stories from the December 1981 Black Flag tour of England. He came along on that one. We made the show when Ian was out here for Coachella. So, get ready for that one.

Until then, check out what we have lined up for this one. We hope you dig it!

Please get some records played and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I don’t know if this concerns you but several minutes ago, I got an e-mail from Zebulon saying that due to visa problems, the Keiji Haino/Peter Peter Brötzmann shows on June 8 & 9 have been postponed. Did you have tickets? I did! Both nights. Ugh. That means I will be reporting to the Wiltern on the 8th for the Sleep concert.

Two well-in-advance heads ups:

  • Molly Nilsson is opening for MGMT at the Palladium on May 18
  • Mdou Moctar @ Zebulon on May 19

Check out our first track, new Nun. I’ve been given permission to play this one song from their upcoming album Dome. We’ll get at the rest when we’re given the green light.

We have confirmed Sunday June 3 for a broadcast that Ian MacKaye, Engineer X and I put together several days ago. It was Ian’s idea. We set up the mics and swapped stories about the Black Flag tour of the UK in December of 1981. Ian came along as part of the road crew and observer. It’s all put together and ready to go. I went to KCRW recently and did all the promos for it. Should be great!

I’ve been off the road, working on two books. We finished the copy edit on one last week and the other is in fourth draft. I’m going to try to get it to copy edit by the end of this month. All this book editing activity has me staring at a computer screen for hours. This is has given me an opportunity to get some good listening in.

Fanatic. It's May already! I hope you had a good April and that you got what you wanted out of RSD 2018. I wish they wouldn't make some records in such small runs. The flippers make it hell for fans all over. I think that was the case with the 100% amazing David Bowie live set Welcome To The Black Hole 3LP set. That one should just be out for people to buy at decent price because Fanatic, you really need that one.

Have you heard the new Sleep album, The Sciences? I've been self-prescribing one play a day and I'm feeling great. It is so good.

It's not for me to steal any band's thunder but I will say that at this moment, I'm listening to a new and unreleased album and I must say, we're going to have a great time playing tracks from this one, whenever it's released. This is but one of a slew of great new records that we'll be rocking later this year.

Have you seen the heads up for the new Arndales album Shops? It's so great. Another happening release from ours pals over at In The Red. Loving this album.

And then, right now, at 1133 hrs. today, Friday May 4, I get an email informing me that Tony Kinman of the Dils, Rank and File, Blackbird and Ford Madox Ford, to name a few of the bands he was in, has passed away. The Dils singles were some of the first Punk records I ever had. You're Not Blank is one of the best songs to come from the California punk scene. A great musician.

Two well-in-advance heads ups:

  • Molly Nilsson is opening for MGMT at the Palladium on May 18
  • Mdou Moctar @ Zebulon May 19

Fanatic, as you can see, we, as always, have put together a rockin' show here. I'm working on the June shows now. My schedule is such that I have work well in advance. This particular show was constructed in a hotel room in Berlin. No matter where I go, there's always radio stuff to work on. I find that to be a good deal.

Please keep listening and stay Fanatic.

Fanatic. It's another night of great music. We hope you're digging all the new additions to our roster. I've been reaching out to different labels to get advances and the correct times to add new tracks to our show and we'll be putting in new stuff all summer.

I've been communicating with Boys Next Door / Birthday Party drummer Phil Calvert and he just told me that Brian Henry Hooper of the Beasts Of Bourbon has just passed away. Phil was auctioning off some things to help Brian out. He was a good guy and a great musician.

There will be a new Le Butcherettes LP this year. I've heard it and I don't think Ms. Gender Bender has ever sounded better. We'll get tracks on the show as soon as we’re allowed. Also, there's a new Nun album. It's cool and very different than their first one. Again, we'll be getting tracks onto the show as soon as we get the nod.

We are going to have some great shows this year.

I hope you had a great Record Store Day. I'm looking forward to rocking the Bowie live 1978 live 3LP set. That was a great tour and there's some really cool bootlegs from it here and there. I haven't heard one I didn't like. I listened to the tour stop in Sydney last night and it was excellent.

Have a  great week and stay Fanatic.

Fanatic! As I have told you too many times, I put our shows together according to temperature and light cycle. I built this show in Australia and Los Angeles. Both environments were warm to hot. The songs arranged as they are, make sense to me.

Right now, I’m in Chicago. 34F! If anyone’s listening in this kind of climate, I hope you like the show. I got here yesterday and it totally threw my climate/listening balance off!

Soon, I’ll be in Germany for a few days, where it seems to be a little warmer than this.

Records I’ve been checking out:

La Contra Ola

Lithics

Cold Beat

Brian Case

I’m digging all these and we will start tracks with some of them next week and all of them by the end of the month.

Also, on the 22nd, we start in with new music by Drinks.

Okay, out into the cold I must go.

Fanatic! Back from Australia. I always have a great time there, it's hard to leave.

Just to let you know, something to look forward to. I forget if I told you this or not but when I was in Melbourne weeks ago, I spent about four hours at Strangeworld Records and ended up getting a lot of vinyl. I've been getting through a few LPs a day and there's not a bad on in the bunch. Our mid-April shows will start to show these new tracks. Very excited about being able to bring all this new music to you. I think you’re going to like the bands.

Fanatic! We’re almost wrapped out of shoot day #09. I’m on a plane right now with one last shot to do once we drop our gear at the hotel. Four more work days to go and then I’m headed back to Los Angeles for awhile.

As per usual, on a shoot schedule like this one, there’s little time to listen to music. It’s more about getting the lights out as soon as possible and getting some sleep before it all starts again. We have nothing but 0600 hrs. calls for the rest of the week.

We have for you here, a great assemblage of tunes, which of course we hope you will like. Much more to come this year as there are a lot of great releases coming out and as well, I have a great stack of vinyl I’ll be lugging back to Los Angeles next week, the best parts of all that will hopefully make it to your ears on this show, sooner than later.

Before we started work this morning, I went through a list of RSD releases. I will get more into it tonight if time permits.

Keep the music happening and STAY FANATIC!!!
