Fanatic! I hope you’re enduring. We have a great show for you.

Below is some information about a show that Engineer X and I put together.

For many years, Engineer X and I have had this idea for a long form show. I mean really long form. Like hours. To do it terrestrially would be difficult because we would be crowding other shows out. But if it was online, hey.

Recently, I got an email from Tyler at KCRW and we got to writing back and forth about programming ideas. I pitched him on this online only show called The Cool Quarantine. It's as many songs as I want, language issues are not a factor and if anyone gets bored, they can just turn it off or mark the time they checked out and resume later.

The idea is that you're in your room, Engineer X  and I come over. We play songs, I tell you stories and we do time together. Now that many of us are under some kind of confinement, we might as well get some good listening happening. Let's go long!

We'll put one up and see what you think. It's kind of like the show we do on Sundays but without time constraints or worrying about FCC compliance.

It's an extra slice of pizza. It will be completely indulgent, Fanatic of course, and hopefully, as Iggy Pop, the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Of Rock And Roll says, "a real cool time."

You can access the show here:

https://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/music-special/henry-rollins-radio-longform-joy-division-ian-mackaye

I hope you get a chance to check it out.

The 16th is Ian MacKaye’s birthday!

I’ve been trying to stay inside. I have a ton of work to do, so I’ve just been staying on that. I haven’t lost track of which day of the week it is but I’ll have to check on how long I’ve been adhering to the stay at home guidelines. Time has become somewhat fluid. I’m trying to make the best of this time with a lot of writing and editing.

Please take good care of yourself and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope you're reading this. If so, thank you.  This is a format Engineer X and I have wanted to do for a long time. I think the concept is best summed up by paraphrasing a press release I wrote for KCRW several days ago.

It will be completely indulgent, Fanatic of course, and hopefully, as Iggy Pop, the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Of Rock And Roll says, "a real cool time."

https://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/music-special/henry-rollins-radio-longform-joy-division-ian-mackaye

Here's another thing I wrote up for The Cool Quarantine that gives you some details for this, our first but hopefully not last CQ broadcast.

Hello, wonderful KCRW listener. Here is a brief description of what we’ll be checking out on this, our first broadcast of the Cool Quarantine!

This is a show free of the constraints you might be accustomed to on regular terrestrial radio.

One of my favorite things about music is that often, there’s a good story about any one album or song. I specifically put tracks into this show so I could tell you the story before we play the song. A couple of examples from this show would include a live Cramps track from 1979 that was recorded by Ian MacKaye and also, the first cassette I ever copied. Another would be a live Led Zeppelin track from the time Ian and I saw them play.

We will be playing different songs from different bands of course but we’ll also be listening to entire albums, EPs and singles. At four hours, this is lonnnnnnnnng form programming!

So, why did we start the Cool Quarantine? Two reasons. The first is that I wanted to make a show that felt like those great hang outs you might have done where you and some friends descend on someone’s house, everyone brings some records and the jam session goes and goes. Also, I know that you might be spending some long spells in your dwelling, so I wanted to make a show that conformed to that.

That’s it, basically. The wheel has not been reinvented, no great breakthrough in broadcasting has been established. It is hopefully, a good time. I’m so glad and thankful that KCRW has allowed Engineer X and myself to do this.

If you like the show, please let someone at KCRW know and if the interest is there, we’ll make another one. Engineer X and I are here to serve!

That's it, pretty much. For now, we're not going to post the track list. I just want you to listen and not necessarily know what's coming next. In a week or so, Lisa will re-post these notes with all the songs. For now, please hit play and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! Ugh. Cancelations. We lost the Butch Willis documentary showing at Zebulon and the Lorelle Meets The Obsolete show as well. Please kick in a few bucks to their go fund me page to help them get home.

Also, this just in:

Hey friends!

We are devastated to announce the rest of our US / CA tour has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 national emergency. We were determined to make it until the end along with our lovely friends from The Underground Youth but it’s just not possible anymore.

At this point we all just want to make it home safe and sound. While Andrea (drums) and Fernando (bass) are trying to fly back to Italy, the rest of us (Lore, Beto & José) are stranded in New York state with a van full of backline and merch which we inevitably have to drive back to Mexico.

With so many things we had to pay in advance for the tour (work visas, flights, van, merch, etc.) and all the fees we won’t receive anymore we’re in a serious financial black hole. So we have set up a GoFundMe page to stay afloat. We’re true warriors but this is beyond our reach.

Anything helps really and if you’re not in a position of donating please spread the word.

The Underground Youth will also have a crowdfunding page soon. We’re in the same position and we all need your help.

Much love to all of you. Stay safe.

Lore, Beto, Fernando, Andrea & José

Very challenging and interesting times we’re in.

Keep your cool and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic. The great McCoy Tyner, Jazz pianist extraordinaire, the last remaining member of the legendary Classic Quartet, with John Coltrane, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison, has passed away. Friday night, I listened to the excellent Both Directions At Once 2LP set and thought about how lucky we are to have their music.

One of the albums I’m very excited about is the 14 LP set of the Stooges Fun House Sessions coming out in a limited edition of in July. I’ve just finished playing all the test pressings and it’s amazing.

Please make note and clear your calendar for March 22 when the Butch Willis documentary Amateur On Plastic will be showing at Zebulon. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this since I heard about it. Information | Trailer

On April 1 and 2, Les Filles de Illighadad of Niger will be at Zebulon. Great music.

Also, there’s more great news. Lorelle Meets The Obsolete is playing at the Echo on April 6

The new Le Butcherettes 12” is out and it’s great. The new Cold Beat album Mother is Hannah’s best.

The Wasted Shirt album is out and it’s a monster. So many great albums out right now.

We have a great show lined up for you with more to come. There are some great records coming out this year. In a few weeks, we’ll be able to start the Coriky album. It’s great and we’ll get into all of it.

A few hours ago, I was talking to a member of a legendary LA band and he told me that they planned on releasing some of their old recordings this year. This is great news and since there’s no formal release date, I’ll wait to hear  more news but if it happens, this will be great.

Also, get ready for two great RSD 2020 releases coming out on In The Red Records that Larry Hardy and I have prepared for your enjoyment. The test pressings are band and they sound amazing. So stoked about this. We’re already lining up more for later this year.

I hope you dig the show and until next week, enjoy the spring weather and stay Fanatic.

Fanatic! I think this will be the last or next to last show for cold weather. Even though there are some cold weeks remaining, March to me at least is the start of spring.

I’ve had a very interesting weekend. I’ve been working on a project that will be announced soon and I’ll put the press release in here. I think you’re gong to be into it.

I put in last week’s announcements so I didn’t have to type them again. Here they are.

The Coriky album featuring Ian MacKaye, Amy Farina and Joe Lally is now available for pre-order. It's a great one. You can hear the track Clean Kill now online. We'll play all of this one starting at release date time.

You know, we've been playing a lot of tracks from Edith Crash's great Frenzy album. We'll get into the album she did before that, Partir, soon. It's really cool. If you want to get a jump on things, here you go

Please make note and clear your calendar for March 22 when the Butch Willis documentary Amateur On Plastic will be showing at Zebulon. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this since I heard about it. Information | Trailer

Did you see that the new Lorelle Meets The Obsolete 12”. The vinyl was sold out when I got to the bandcamp page but there are copies in other places

I’ve got the tracks and they’re great. We’ll get more of them played in a few weeks when the record comes out.

Thanks for listening. We hope you dig the show.

Have a great week and STAY FANATIC!!!

Shameless Plug Dept.: There are less than 50 copies of my new book Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 1 left. There are at least four people who said they liked it, so, well, there's that.

Get Ready Get Set Dept.: As you might know, Larry Hardy of In The Red Records and I are always up to something. We have two super cool RSD 7"s ready. Test pressings of one of them came back a few days ago and sound AMAZING. We get test pressings of the other one tomorrow. We didn't press many of either. We have more things planned for later this year. I'll keep you posted.

Fanatic, please enjoy tonight's show. There are some records coming out this year that I'm so excited about. It's not for me to say anything before it’s time but I have them there and all I can say is that it's going to be a great year for records and we can all be into it together.

Enjoy the show and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! A great show awaits. I’ve been trying to get as much listening as I can since last week. I’ve been doing a lot of running around to meetings, which puts me in traffic and lots of time on the road and cuts down on time in front of the speakers but I’m trying to catch up. I’m always trying to catch up.

You know we’ve been playing all the tracks we’ve been allowed of the Wasted Shirt album as we get to the end of the month when the album comes out. There has been another pressing in bright green.

Also, this is really cool, selected stores will have a test pressing for the lucky ones. Here’s where the stores will be: https://bit.ly/37rkFVp

When I start putting tracks for a show together, I never know how it’s going to end up. Some of the points are predetermined because of new releases but past that, I’m not exactly sure how we’ll end up. I think that keeps things interesting. It also takes a long time to complete. This show started with hearing The Locomotion in my head and going from there. I was surprised to find that I didn’t have that song in my hard drive.

We hope you dig the show. Have a great week and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week. I’m buried in work and don’t know when I’ll be topside. I’ve got a lot of records to play, so I’m hanging in there.

I heard a great album last night that I think you’re going to like. I don’t know when the release date is and it’s not for me to get out in front of a band but I think you’re going to like it when we start tracks, whenever we get the green light.

Also, a great album by our good our pal and sonic ally, Hannah Lew aka Cold Beat, has a new release slated for the end of February called Mother. I listened to the LP last night. I think it’s great from start to finish. We have a track on next week’s show and will wait for the label to let us know when we can play more. Here’s the info:

https://coldbeatsf.bandcamp.com/album/mother

The great FDH Records is having a sale and one of the cooler items is the Trash On!!! box set, a 6LP retrospective of the P.Trash label. The label’s owner, Peter Eichhorn was killed in a car accident on 01-18-18. This is the description from Discogs:

P.Trash Records, FDH Records & No Front Teeth Records present a 6 LP tribute to Peter Eichhorn & P.Trash Records featuring 104 bands with 59 previously unreleased tracks by The Spits, Mean Jeans, Steve Adamyk Band, Lover, Statues, The Manikins, Teledrome, Digital Leather, Modern Pets, Sonic Avenues & loads more.

It’s  a cool set from an excellent label. You might remember that we were playing tracks from it last year. There are a few left at a really good price. If you want to check it out, here’s the info:

https://fdhrecords.bandcamp.com/album/trash-on-a-tribute-to-p-trash-records

Wasted Shirt, who is Ty Segall and Brian Chippendale are set to release Fungus II soon. We’ve been able to play one track so far. I can’t wait to be able to get the other tracks on the show. Great record.

Fanatic! I hope you have emerged from the coma of the holidays and find yourself ready for 2020. We are doing our best to bring a great show once a week and hopefully, we’ve done it once again.

I’m excited to finally be able to tell you about a record I’ve been sitting on for months. Wasted Shirt is Ty Segall and Brian Chippendale. They have made an album that will be released on 02-28-20 called Fungus II. It’s really cool. Here’s some information on the record and how to preorder.

https://madmimi.com/p/f798ff?pact=376786-156321625-8103825552-5c224eba2317ab7e40d3c5c98344230a8f125f59

It still being January, we can only play what Cyrus at Famous Class has turned loose so far. When and if he and the band think it’s a good idea to unleash more tracks before release, I’ll get the word and we will put the track right into the show. If you notice, track 5 in hour one is the Wasted Shirt track.

In both hours, we have live tracks donated to the show by the great taper and live music documentarian Gerhard Lippert. If you go to shows in Los Angeles, you might not know it, but you’ve been in the same room with Gerhard. He’s everywhere all the time it seems and we can thank him for capturing the music. Thank you, sir!

This Friday, there will be a showing of Freaked at the Egyptian Theatre. The soundtrack 2LP set is being released on Mondo and will be available in the lobby. I’ll be on hand post film for the panel q&a. Should be a great time.

Some copies of my new book still remain.

I built this show in my micro room in Tokyo late last year. I’ve been back almost two weeks and I’m still trying to shake off the jet lag.

Have a great week and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I’m just back from Tokyo. I found some good records but Shinjuku doesn’t have nearly the same amount of record stores it used to.

I got to see Fushitsusha play an epic 3.5 hour show on December 30, that was great.

In case you’re wondering about Cyndi Lauper and I doing Rise Above several nights ago at her benefit, you can find it by just keying her name and the name of the song into your browser and you can check it out. It was good to help raise money for a worthy cause. Somehow, I never thought I would be standing next to Cyndi Lauper on a stage, doing a song.

Life remains interesting.

Right now, I’m listening to a record that I’m very excited about but it’s not for me to announce it before the label does but I will say that we will be able to play a track from it next week. I’m aware of a few cool looking variants of said album that will be coming out. I’m listening to one now. This is one of those records that will make you glad to be a Fanatic. I’ve had this record for months and haven’t been able to tell anyone about it, so it’s great to finally get tracks to you.

The new Eddy Current And The Suppression Ring album All In Good Time is great! I just finished my second pass through the coke bottle green vinyl version. Also, the new Alien Nose Job album Suddenly Everything Is Twice As Loud is really good. We’ll start tracks soon.

Our show tonight is great from start to finish. We’re back into the Richard Rose and Skull Practitioners 12”s as they’re great and we ended up playing tracks before the records were released and I don’t want you to forget about either of these records.

The new Pharmakon album Devour is fantastic. All Pharmakon records are great but this one is an absolute monster.

Also, we start tracks from the new Edith Crash LP Frenzy next week. Super cool album.

I have a new book out that I’m sure I’ve told you about too many times.

Fanatic, have you ever listened to the TV Eye 1977 Live LP by Iggy Pop? I love this album. I’m listening to it for the millionth time right now. I just found an unplayed UK pressing.

We hope you dig the show!

Fanatic, I can’t tell you what to do, I wouldn’t dare but may I make a suggestion? Keep rocking the jam session and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! Hopefully, you will find our show to be interesting. I’m in Tokyo this week. Later today, I’ll be going to Keiji Haino’s marathon show. It starts at 1900 hrs. and goes until he stops.

I’ve been here for a few days, hitting record stores and looking around. Go from Kikagaku Moyo and Jim O’Rourke gave me some good tips as to shops in Shinjuku and I found some good stuff. I was at Blind Faith, an incredible shop for live shows, and someone from the LA area who’s here pretty often and he told me that there’s not nearly as many shops in Shinjuku as there used to be.

We’ll be plugging in some of the records that I found here in two weeks. I was working on a show here earlier today set for January 12.

We have wrapped another year at KCRW. We are grateful for the chance to be with you every Sunday.

We hope you dig the show. Enjoy what’s left of the holidays and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic. I hope you’re having a holiday of some kind, however you choose to go about that. I have been listening to a lot of records and it’s been a great time. We have a great two hours of programming ready for you, as you can see below.

I’m putting in last week’s notices into this week’s notes.

My new book, Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 1 is out. Signed copies can be ordered here:

Have you heard the new Eddy Current Suppression Ring album? Mine came in yesterday. It’s really good. We’ll get into it next year.

I’m liking this album by Edith Crash.

As you might be aware, on this day in 1985, we lost the great D Boon of the Minutemen. To this day, it’s hard for me to listen to their records, great as they are. Fanatic, if you’ve never checked out their records, I direct you to the Paranoid Time EP and The Punch Line to start. If you like what you hear, proceed through their records chronologically and they might become one of your favorite bands. I was lucky to have seen them many times.

Be careful on the roads over the next few days. Taxis and other means of transportation are readily available.

Until next week, play some records and stay Fanatic.

Fanatic! Have we got a great show for you tonight! I’ve wanted to turn this one loose for quite awhile. Check out our second hour. We are going to listen to the original mixes of Songs The Lord Taught Us by the Cramps from a good quality test pressing. Just my opinion, I think it’s a way better mix all around. I think you’re really going to like this.

You Los Angeles area Fanatics must have had a great last few days. Two nights of Alex Cameron and two nights of the Make-Up. I went to see both bands. SO GREAT.

Last night was surreal but I’ll wait until next week to tell you about it.

My new book, Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 1 is out. Signed copies can be ordered here.

We hope you dig the show.

Keep getting records and STAY FANATIC!!!
