Fanatic! August will soon be upon us. The end of summer is nigh. I want to travel but I can’t. I want to do this or that or whatever else, but I can’t. I know you’re going through your own version of this so I’m not trying to complain. I mentioned all this because I wanted to tell you that I’m so glad you’re listening to the show and so glad it’s something that is useful. Music is great all the time anyway but right now, I think we might be leaning on it harder than at other times in recent memory. So, thanks so much for tuning in. We’ve got a great one lined up for you. 

If you got the download version of the new Damaged Bug album, the full download address probably showed up in your email over the weekend. I got it so I could get the three track and be able to bring them to you. I’ll get more tracks from that one in in weeks to come.

Fanatic. Another intense week. I hope you’ve been keeping well and staying safe. I’ve been working on things as best I can and have been for the most part, busy and getting things done. 

I’ve been getting a lot of listening done and that’s been great. I’ve not taken the time to check out older titles, I’m trying to check out records I haven’t heard yet. It’s such a different mindset than listening to that which is familiar. I like both but right now, newer titles are keeping me looking forward. 

My newest book, Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 1 is back in print. The second pressing came out looking good. 

I got a few emails about the last shows. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying them. That’s what it’s all about. Things are very challenging at present. Music is always good but right now, it’s a great thing to have access to. 

I just watched The Man Who Fell To Earth again yesterday. Interesting piece of work and is still cool to check out.

The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) is doing their level best to keep venues open during these trying times. It’s probably a fact that you haven’t been going to shows like you used to. Imagine being someone who works at a venue and being out of a job or the owner of the venue being crushed by the expenses that leasing a space entails. I had shows this year and they all got canceled. I have tour dates booked for the future and have no idea if I’ll get to do those shows. It’s been a strange time these last several weeks. I’ve been working every day and actually getting a lot done. I go out only to get the mail twice a week and groceries now and then. Fanatic! Another week of liquid time. I looked at the calendar and was momentarily surprised that it’s already ten days into May. It is? Yes.

I hope you’ve been bearing up in these trying times. A few things I want to run by you. 

As might imagine, the damned virus has made release schedules move around. One of my favorite releases for this year, Alice Bag’s Sister Dynamite album came out last Friday but due to In The Red Records distributor not being open for the next several days, ITR is only able to sell the record digitally and mail order. SO, the album is available and it’s a great one but you need to order it from the ITR site. I know it’s a pain in the neck not to be able to go to the record store. Prolific punk icon, singer/songwriter, musician, author and feminist, Alice Bag has released her new album Sister Dynamite via In The Red Records. Throughout the album, Bag reveals her incredible ability to turn nuanced political statement into impossibly catchy punk songs. New album single “Spark” lights a fire against the haters. A song about self-acceptance and self-love, it exalts the differences that other people might see as odd or queer because they are what makes you unique. 

 Her third solo effort, the album marks a thrilling return to the full-throttle punk that Bag pioneered with her legendary first-wave punk band, The Bags. While maintaining a “communicate not indoctrinate” line of thought when it comes to her songwriting, Bag hopes that the songs on Sister Dynamite might help to build the profound sense of solidarity she experienced back in the original L.A. punk community. With its breakneck velocity and galvanizing melodies, Bag teamed up with her core group of musicians to achieve the album’s kinetic sound. Co-produced by Bag and her longtime collaborator Lysa Flores (who plays rhythm guitar and sings backing vocals on several songs) at L.A.’s Station House Studios, Sister Dynamite finds features guitarist Sharif Dumani and bassist David O. Jones with Candace P.K. Hansen and Rikki “Styxx” Watson trading off on drums, each lending her distinct musicality to the album’s potent rhythms.

As I’m sure you’re well aware, we lost three major musicians over the last few days. Tony Allen, peerless drummer of Fela Kuti renown, Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk and Little Richard. It’s a lot to take in. Next week, we will rock some Tony solo and Kraftwerk tracks and get to some Little Richard later in the month. I’m sorry for not being able to be more responsive but we’re all working from different places on the show.

For many years, Engineer X and I have had this idea for a long form show. I mean really long form. Like hours. To do it terrestrially would be difficult because we would be crowding other shows out. But if it was online, hey.

Recently, I got an email from Tyler at KCRW and we got to writing back and forth about programming ideas. I pitched him on this online only show called The Cool Quarantine. It's as many songs as I want, language issues are not a factor and if anyone gets bored, they can just turn it off or mark the time they checked out and resume later. 

The idea is that you're in your room, Engineer X  and I come over. We play songs, I tell you stories and we do time together. Now that many of us are under some kind of confinement, we might as well get some good listening happening. Let's go long! 

We'll put one up and see what you think. It's kind of like the show we do on Sundays but without time constraints or worrying about FCC compliance. 

It's an extra slice of pizza. It will be completely indulgent, Fanatic of course, and hopefully, as Iggy Pop, the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Of Rock And Roll says, "a real cool time."

Hello, wonderful KCRW listener. Here is a brief description of what we’ll be checking out on this, our first broadcast of the Cool Quarantine!

This is a show free of the constraints you might be accustomed to on regular terrestrial radio. 

One of my favorite things about music is that often, there’s a good story about any one album or song. I specifically put tracks into this show so I could tell you the story before we play the song. A couple of examples from this show would include a live Cramps track from 1979 that was recorded by Ian MacKaye and also, the first cassette I ever copied. Another would be a live Led Zeppelin track from the time Ian and I saw them play. 

We will be playing different songs from different bands of course but we’ll also be listening to entire albums, EPs and singles. At four hours, this is lonnnnnnnnng form programming!

So, why did we start the Cool Quarantine? Two reasons. The first is that I wanted to make a show that felt like those great hang outs you might have done where you and some friends descend on someone’s house, everyone brings some records and the jam session goes and goes. Also, I know that you might be spending some long spells in your dwelling, so I wanted to make a show that conformed to that. 

That’s it, basically. The wheel has not been reinvented, no great breakthrough in broadcasting has been established. It is hopefully, a good time. I’m so glad and thankful that KCRW has allowed Engineer X and myself to do this.
