RADIO BROADCAST #419 04-09–17

Fanatic! It’s April 5 and I am still recovering from the greatness of Alex Cameron’s show last night in Highland Park. The man is amazing. Later in the year, I think we should serialize Jumping the Shark one more time. So cool hearing some of those songs live. Mid week shows are hard but Alex and his band were worth it.

You know that record Larry from In the Red and I are releasing for Record Store Day, the one I tell you about but won’t tell you what it is? It’s back from the pressing plant and I think I will be seeing copies soon. I am writing up the notes for it and will post them soon. Can’t wait to see this one.

If at all possible, I want you to try to tune in for next week’s show as we will be live in the studio with our very special Guest Seymour Stein. Mr. Stein started working in the record industry when he was a teenager. He’s in his mid-seventies now and has seen a lot. He’s got stories for days. He started some label called Sire. He signed the Ramones, the Talking Heads, Madonna, the Dead Boys to name but a few.

Weeks ago, his daughter Mandy contacted me and asked if we would be interested in having her dad on the show and of course, that was a yes. I was on the phone with the man yesterday and he was great. Go online and check out some of his interviews. He’s been in the business of records all his life and his enthusiasm for music is only growing. He’s a perfect guest for us. So, be ready for stories, music and a very unique show. I asked him if there was anything I could bring to the studio for him and he said, “Espresso!” Oh, hell yes.

Let’s see, the week after, we will have another guest. I think his name is Ian MacKaye. Apparently, he has made some records. We will see what he has to say for himself on the twenty-third.

So, we have the below tracks for you for this coming Sunday, then there’s Seymour Stein and Ian MacKaye the week after that and we have Record Store Day to look forward to. I would say that in spite of what’s happening in the world, there are some good things happening too.

We hope you dig the show and get ready for Seymour Stein!

Keep jamming and STAY FANATIC!!!

RADIO BROADCAST #418 04-02–17

Fanatic! I am very happy about this show. I built it several days ago, played it through a couple of times, made a few adjustments and reckoned it was ready for your evaluation and hopefully, your great enjoyment.

The new Ty Segall single is really good. I like the new album but like these two new songs even better. If his next album sounds like these two songs, we’re in for another great Ty album. The two color version is out of print but there is a red vinyl version on the way. I have not seen it yet. http://suicidesqueezerecords.tumblr.com

I hope you got your Damaged Bug album by now. Bunker Funk is an interesting record. It’s different than the last two. I have heard it a few times now and I’m liking it more and more. It’s on Castle Face. https://www.castlefacerecords.com

In the Red has so many cool records coming out now and in the not so distant future, I don’t know when Larry will get any sleep until the end of the year. We are playing some of them tonight. Keep your eye on ITR. http://intheredrecords.com

New music by Dan Valor also known as Clarinette. A record called The Now of Then. Very good. We have a track lined up in hour 2. https://clarinette.bandcamp.com

A few days ago, I wrote Steph from Dick Diver to ask what she and the band are up to. She has a couple of projects happening and will have some new music up hopefully this year. She sent me some demos and they are really good. When she is ready to release, we will be there.

There is a new Lower Plenty album out called Sister Sister. It came out last year. I was sent the songs before then and told to sit on them until I was told I could play them for you. They forgot to tell me the record was out, so like a good Fanatic, I held the line. Well, the record came out like four months ago and we are behind the curve, so we have some catching up to do. http://bedroomsuckrecords.com/shop/lower-plenty-sister-sister/

Enough of my prattling!

Dig the jams and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! Did your Damaged Bug Bunker Funk album come in yet? I got mine a few days ago. Sounds great on vinyl as does the Crystal Fairy album.

Two great records set to come out soon on In The Red Records. Larry Hardy is tearing it up this year. Run, do not walk to these records. First, the new CFM album, Dichotomy Desaturated which will be out soon. Larry gave us the green light to start playing tracks now and of course, we did. Look at the beginning of hour 2. Great record. Also, Chain and the Gang are now on In the Red. They have a record called The Best of Crime Rock coming out soon. It is re-recordings of some of their earlier songs along with some new ones thrown in. The last time I saw them, they played The Logic of Night, new at the time, it really stood out. This song is on the new album and we have it on the show for you in our first hour. Both of these records will be available soon on In the Red. http://intheredrecords.com/blogs/news

Like I told you before, Larry and I are in cahoots, working together to release a very cool single for RSD. It’s being pressed right now. Since Larry and I did it, there are some interesting color variations. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THESE. So excited about this record. Get ready, get set. All profits from the record are going to the band. We want to see this one blow out in one day. We will announce soon.

We hope you dig the show. Already working on next week’s.

Keep up on the news and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! Obviously I have no idea from where you’re reading this but here in Los Angeles it looks like the heat is back and while the east coast is digging itself out of several feet of snow, it’s turning back into the desert with traffic here.

The new Damaged Bug album is out. I ordered up and can’t wait to hear this one on vinyl. Here is where you can go for more information: https://www.castlefacerecords.com/products/damaged-bug-bunker-funk

A few different color variations, most of them selling out almost immediately. Those who are so inclined, who were nine seconds late for class can look forward to seeing these records at inflated prices at auction and purchase sites online starting almost immediately.

The Crystal Fairy album came out and its run of floro pink vinyl sold through. There is a small run of lavender colored vinyl out of the UK and another small run of a different color planned soon.  I got a chance to hear the LP a few days ago and it’s a great one. We start our wonderful show with a track from it as we did last week.

For those with access to Netfilx, I would recommend the Danny Says documentary. The Danny mentioned is one Danny Fields. It’s hard to believe one guy was at the start of so much cool stuff in music but that was Danny’s life. It’s an amazing story.

For this show, we get to the other side of the Damaged Bug / Black Pus single that was just released by our sonic allies at Famous Class. Great record, great label: http://famousclass.com/

After a couple of drafts, I have listened to our gathering of tracks here and think it’s going to work rather well, that is to say, I’m on board.

I hope you find all these great tracks to be to your liking.

Fanatic! Another week and another great show! I am just back from a week in Mexico City where I checked out Iggy Pop, the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of Rock and Roll, play three nights. It was a great time. Teresa and Omar from Crystal Fairy were there for the second night. As you can see below, we start the show with a track from their excellent new album.

I listened to Rain’s La Vache Qui Rit album a few days ago for the first time since last August. That’s a seasonal one for me, after August 31, it goes out of rotation until spring. I thought it would be good to put a track from it into the mix. It’s frustrating that the record is so scarce and expensive when you do see one. There are a few on Discogs but they are a lot. If you ever see this one, or any other record on the Peterbilt label at an affordable price, you might want to check it out.

The Tony Conrad documentary Completely in the Present will show on the 16th at The Theater at the Ace Hotel. Conrad was a fascinating musician and thinker. I strongly recommend this doc to you. Here is information:
http://www.acehotel.com/calendar/losangeles/un-private-collection-tony-conrad-completely-present

Did you notice the new Damaged Bug track in hour 1? That’s from a new split single on Famous Class. The flip side is Black Pus. Unsurprisingly, both songs are great. I think the color edition is gone but the black vinyl pressing is still available. Here is the Famous Class address for more information: http://famousclass.com/. It’s a good idea to get on the mailing list and get a heads up when these limited records hit.

Thanks for Engineer X, we have a sanitized version of H Eyes to start our second hour. It is restrictive, the language issues on radio but rules are rules. It is without a doubt, a great gathering of tunes that I hope you dig. Don’t you feel lucky that you like music? It’s not hard to find and always faithful. It’s one of the best deals humans get.

I hope you dig the show and listen to it at least twice.

Listen with intensity and STAY FANATIC!!!

GUEST HOSTING – MUTANT SOUNDS RADIO FRIDAY, MARCH 10 2017

MUTANT SOUNDS
Henry Rollins guest host
10 March 2017

Hello, fellow Mutant. Earlier this year, I met up with Eric Lumbleau & Matt Castille who host and curate the Mutant Sounds show on Dublab. I learned so much from the Mutant Sounds website. It was one of the best music resources ever. Many tracks I got from the MS site were incorporated into my radio shows for years.

In January, Eric & Matt asked me if I wanted to guest host their show. That was an easy yes and I got right to work.

What I came up with is much like the show I do on KCRW but perhaps with a little more emphasis on instrumental tracks.

If you are a Mutant Sounds listener, hopefully you will find these tracks interesting enough to listen to the entire show. It’s rare to get an opportunity to play exactly what you want without thoughts of someone getting steamed somewhere. If you want to hear more of what I’m up to with my own show, you can always find my shows online.

During the show, as per usual, I do a lot of explaining of what we’re listening to, how I found the tracks and where to get more information. I have a feeling that you would probably be able to get more facts about any of these tracks a lot faster than I would, so if anything catches your ear, as it were, there is plenty of ways to find out more online.

Eric & Matt are such great champions of interesting music. They do countless music fans all over the world a great service with their show I am amazed and grateful they threw the ball to me.

I figure we’re lucky to have an attraction music that is outside of the mainstream. It’s far more interesting to be skating on the fringes of anything than stuck in the thick of it. You might have had a similar experience to mine in that at an early age, I knew I was never going to be showing up for much of the regular thing when it came to music. Punk Rock changed everything for me. Hearing the first Suicide album around then made me realize there was a lot more happening and then getting turned onto people like Diamanda Galas, Iannis Xenakis (whose work Diamanda introduced me to about 32 years ago,) George Crumb and others that pretty much blew the doors off the hinges for me and that’s when things got very interesting. It becomes a mindset, an open-mindedness and curiosity that almost runs on its own power, sending you down paths of music that you feel so lucky to have discovered. A few years of this and you have more records than time to listen to them. I’ll take that over no music and hour after hour of silence any time.

Here are the tracks:

01. Mukhsin – no title available / Folk And Pop Sounds Of Sumatra Vol. 2
02. Augusto Klamm – Monologue / Poisonous Fragrances
03. Lydia Kavina - Improvisation / Music From The Ether: Original Works For Theremin

26. Scott Walker – Pilgrim / Bish Bosch
27. Les Rallizes Dénudés - Ice Fire / France Demo Tape Winter 88 - Spring 89

If all goes according to plan, this broadcast will cause one of the better problems you can have: a need to go the record store to get more records. That’s one of the best jams you’ll ever find yourself in. Thanks again to Eric and Matt for the confidence in letting me do this and thanks to you for listening.

Keep mutating!!!

RADIO BROADCAST #414 03-05–17

Fanatic! I am presently in Mexico City. I am here to see the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of Rock and Roll, Mr. Iggy Pop play three shows. The first one was last night. It’s a night on and a night off. Iggy and the band were great. They played in front of over 60 thousand people. Metallica is closing the show. Years ago, I decided that it would be a good idea to see Iggy play as much as I could, so when he finally does hang up his spikes, I will have done my best.

Now that the sun is down, I am on the street, checking things out. I am at a coffee place, watching people go by. The weather is cool and perfect for hanging out.

As you know, Fanatic, to a certain extent, we make our show according to season and light cycle. I know that one person’s warm weather listen is another’s winter favorite. I also know that a lot of people think that all this is nonsense and they listen to what they want. All of that is fine with me, Fanatic. I just can’t help it, some music speaks to me at different times of the year. That being said, I reckon it’s spring time. I know the calendar says it’s March 20 but it’s feeling like spring to me.

Over the next few shows, I will start transitioning in some warmer weather tracks. Nico is one of my favorite cold weather artists. Awhile ago, I found two very rare Nico bootleg LPs and was intending to play them last month but forgot. I am going to wait until at least November to check them out. I know that’s ridiculous but that’s how I am. There’s plenty to listen to in the mean time.

Crystal Fairy LP on Ipecac is out right now and there will be a lot of great releases this year. Speaking of great records coming out this year, Larry Hardy at In the Red Records and I have a great Record Store Day release that’s being pressed up right now. We approved the test pressings a few days ago. It’s a co-release between In the Red and my label. I came to him last year with the idea, he was into it and we went to work. It’s going to be a great one.

Just in case you’re interested, I put together a show for Mutant Sounds. They do their show at Dublab. That goes out on Friday March 10 at 2000 hrs. PST. Here is where you can get more information: http://dublab.com/events/29092/vas-deferens-organization-%e2%80%93-mutant-sounds-radio/

If I have time, I will write up show notes for that show as well, so you know what’s happening.

For now, let’s dig all the great tunes we have lined up right here, shall we?

I hope you dig the show and STAY FANATIC!!!

RADIO BROADCAST #413 02-26–17

Fanatic! What a show we have for you. A lot of new bands in our second hour. As I am writing this, I am listening to Negative Growth by Ex-Cult. I think it might have overtaken Midnight Passenger as my favorite album of theirs. We have played tracks from Negative Growth before but to really get it, you need to hear the record all the way through.

Anyway, our show. We have been given the all clear to play any tracks we want from the new Crystal Fairy album and we will be using that to its fullest extent. Not a bad track on that one.

If you notice in our second hour, we have a lot of bands and artists that we have never had on the show before. I just got these records, so I am not at all able to tell you much about any of it, besides what I’ve heard so far is really cool. I will get into it as the days go on and hopefully have more information when we play them next.

I hope you dig the shows and that you are getting some listening in. I am turning in pretty good numbers, averaging about five records a day as I slowly bore through tonnage. It’s a great chore.

Now listening to the Alice album by Meatbodies, another great one!

Get your listening going and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! Another great show lined up for you. I can’t be sure where you’re listening to the show from so I don’t know what the weather is like where you are. Around these parts (Los Angeles) it’s quite warm to the point of feeling like spring. Some of our selections are skewed towards the slightly increased temperatures of the last few days. It sure doesn’t feel like February around here.

We have new Spectres music. Thanks to Joe Spectres for sending us the new Condition album. I am not sure when that one comes out but I will get that information. Until then, we will get more tracks from it to you over the next several weeks.

Worth checking out is a new band that makes its appearance at the beginning of our second hour. They are called Crystal Fairy. Very happy to be able to start playing tracks from this one. You can pre-order from their bandcamp page. When you do, you get three songs from the album. I figured those would be safe to play, so tonight, we start in with this album that we will probably play all the tracks from. It’s that good. Omar from At the Drive In, Dale and Buzzo from the Melvins and Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes. That’s the band. It is a great record. https://crystalfairy.bandcamp.com/

We hope you dig the show.

Keep listening and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic! I hope that if you were in the Los Angeles area last week, you were able to check out one of the Melvins/Sleep shows at the Fonda. So great.

If you check out our tracks below, Fanatic, you will see some new bands. When I was in Australia last year, I picked up a lot of records, not all of them from Australia. One of them was the Glomb album by Mosquito Ego. I was listening to it last week and really liked it, so I put a track into our show. If you like it, the rest of the record is as good.

Asa from Lungfish has been making records under the handle Zomes for quite awhile and they are very cool but on his last album Near Unison, he changed things up and brought in Hanna Olivegren for vocals, keyboard and bass. The results are really good. I thought you would like to hear a track from it. I have had this record for awhile but have not heard it in at least a year.

I got the Cold Meat single in Australia last year, I am guessing from Richie at Strangeworld in Melbourne. Great record.

Way down at the end of the show, we listen to Grouper, aka Liz Harris. I don’t think we have ever played her on the show before. I don’t know why. Her records are really good. I have vinyl of her stuff but not much on digital. I will work on that to get more tracks to you.

It’s a good show all the way through and I hope you will enjoy listening to it at least a few times through. No green card needed.

Play a lot of music and STAY FANATIC!!!

Fanatic!  We have one great show for you. Straight out of the gate, there is a new track by Damaged Bug, aka John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees. We got the green light from the label to play you this one track from the new album Bunker Funk. I am not sure when the album comes out but it’s great all the way through and of course, when we get the go ahead, we will play you all the other tracks on the album.

New Wolf Eyes as well, sounds great. I got an email from my old pal Barry Adamson of Magazine, the Bad Seeds, etc. He sent me this track Sweet Misery, that I thought was really cool, so we put that in the mix. BBC RADIO 6 HENRY IN FOR IGGY POP, JANUARY 27 2017

BBC RADIO 6
Henry Rollins in for Iggy Pop
27 January 2017

Hello BBC Radio 6 listener and fellow music fan. Here we are, back together again as I do my best to fill in for the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of Rock and Roll, Iggy Pop. I hope you dug last week’s show. I think we have yet another tremendous batch of tracks for you.

This show rolls out on Friday night, right? Easily the best night of the week. At that time, you might getting ready to get out and hit the streets and this is the soundtrack that plays in the background as you make your plans. I think the streets of cities in England are some of the best in the world for walking around at night.

Right now as I write this, it’s Saturday night, January 21st in Los Angeles. I am listening to a Joy Division bootleg called Die Kalten Winde Des Winters. It’s from January 15, 1980, in Koln, Germany. It’s a 2LP set and while it’s not the best quality, it’s still really cool. If you are a fan of JD bootleg albums, you have probably noticed that they keep coming out but they are usually the same shows over and over. Leeds, Preston, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, etc. This record, for some reason, rarely turns up. It sounds like the band is playing along through a steady whine of feedback. I don’t know what it is. This is the one show I have not seen pressed and re-pressed every few years. It could be because of all the extra noise. Of all the JD bootlegs I have ever heard, this is one of the harder going sonically but it’s still interesting enough to put on. I met the great music writer Jon Savage weeks ago. We spoke briefly about Joy Division. He said something that he got from actually being there, and that I got from listening to a lot of records. He said that they were one band in the studio and quite another live. I agree. Obviously, in the studio, when the band was working with Martin Hannett, it’s going to be quite a different thing. The studio work was tremendous and live it was, at least from what I can gather by just listening, one of the most intense bands ever.

I don’t hang out with people all that much but I spend a lot of time listening to music, so not only is the music my friend but so are the records. I don’t think you can ever have too many. If I am off the road, that’s probably what I’m doing on a weekend night, checking out the tunes. It never gets old and it never doesn’t make sense.

I try to listen to minimum five records every day, or at least five things—cassettes, CDs and singles count as well. That’s a lot of listening and often impossible to do when I am on the road but I try. My tour of about thirteen months ended five days ago. It’s not easy to be here. I would much rather be on the bus with a show waiting miles down the road. When I am here, I try to get a lot of listening done.

In case you have ever checked out the other times I have been on Radio 6 and wondered if there was any concept behind the assemblage, there is. Here is an explanation. When I put together tracks for a radio show, I basically make it for one person. Like when you make someone a mix tape and you agonize over each track, the order, etc. This is what I do and it often takes a lot of time. The person in my mind I am making the show for is alone in a room in a town or city where he or she doesn’t feel all that welcome or accepted. The locals might not understand but the music does, it always does. As the songs play, everything gets better. Never take your records for granted. Treat them with care and they shall do the same for you. As Sun Ra once said, “Be careful, the music is listening.”

We start out the show with Sister Midnight from The Idiot, for at least two reasons. It is a perfect night time song and let’s not forget whose show this is. Earlier tonight, I listened to The Idiot, a pressing out of New Zealand that I found weeks ago. Last year, I saw Iggy play four times in three countries. To hear him and the band totally pull off Mass Production was amazing.

There are no tracks on our show that you can’t find out more about online. That being said, let’s highlight a few of them because not only is music great to listen to, it’s also great to talk about.

There are a lot of albums by Gary Wilson and in my opinion, they are all worth checking out. If you dig tonight’s GW track, the album it came from, You Think You Really Know Me is a good place to start. An original is really expensive but the folks at Feeding Tube Records have put out a great sounding reissue that’s totally worth it. What a cool label!

As did last week, we listened to a track from the yet to be released album by Crystal Fairy, featuring the Melvins teaming up with Teresa Suarez, aka Terri Gender Bender. The album is out later this year on Ipecac Recordings and it’s really great. Thanks again to press person Monica who let us have the tracks. We were very fortunate to get these to you. http://ipecac.com

Also, I have to put a word in for Soccer Team. The band was, at its core, Melissa Quinley and Ryan Nelson. Now the band has been fleshed out by Dennis Kane on drums and Jason Hutto on second guitar. Just my opinion, there is not one bad song in the bunch. Ryan is a brilliant songwriter. The new-ish album, Real Lessons in Cynicism, is the excellent follow up to the ‘Volunteered’ Civility and Professionalism album. Tonight, we rock a song from their three song 7”. All of these records are on the mighty Dischord label, owned and operated by Ian MacKaye. Oh, I have to add this. Jason Hutto is in a really cool band called The Aquarium, they also have records on Dischord.

No way can I let you go without talking about Alex Cameron. One extraordinarily talented musician. He’s out of Australia. He has made records with George Nicholas and John Hassell under the name Seekae that are excellent. Their album The Worry is a great place to start. In 2014, Alex released Jumping the Shark. It’s a concept album about a has-been plotting a comeback. It’s is SO good. Secretly Canadian has re-issued it. If you like the track from the album we play tonight, the rest of the record is as great. The videos are not to be missed.

Tonight’s show was put together over several days in backstage areas of venues in at least a few countries. It was played over and over again, changes were made and after several drafts, it was done. BBC Radio 6 listener, I never phone it in.

Thanks to Adam Dineen for engineering and producing the show. Thanks to Radio 6 for letting me in the building. I can’t explain how cool it is for me to do a BBC Radio show! To fill in for the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of Rock and Roll is a rare honor that is not lost on me. Thanks for listening. Below are all the tracks.

RADIO BROADCAST #407 01-15–17

Fanatic! After two days off to get from Saskatoon, Canada down to where I am now in Clearwater, Florida, tonight I start the last of the shows of the tour. After 13 months, exhausting as it can be, I would like nothing more than to start the whole thing over again.

I am very happy about this show and looking forward to start folding in a lot of new music that has been coming in. We are looking to make 2017 a great year of having the opportunity to bring you some really cool jams. As you know, that’s basically our plan every year, of course, but we are always trying to up our game.

In the next few days, I will be preparing next week’s show. It will be fresh made! We hope you enjoy what we have put together for you and look forward to being back with you next week.

Remember that every day is Record Store Day and STAY FANATIC!!!

RADIO BROADCAST #406 01-08–17

Fanatic! It is David Bowie’s birthday. I thought this was a great opportunity to listen to a lot of Mr. B’s amazing music. You might remember, we did a show kinda sorta like this last year. I pulled out that track list and did my best to not repeat.

I am no expert on the great man’s music, I am just a fan, so this is not some expertly curated overview of the entire catalog. I don’t think a mere two hours would be enough time to afford such a thing, so instead of that, what we have here is a cool David Bowie mix tape that we hope you enjoy.

I am on the bus, in Canada, on the way from Kelowna to Vancouver. The cold is incredible. A few shows from now, I will be in Florida. So for now, we are layered up but we will be shedding soon as we head south.

We hope you enjoy this slim slice of one of the greatest recorded catalogs ever. Perhaps this will inspire you to get some of these records on LP. Some of the best listening you’ll ever do, Fanatic.

Have a great, music filled week, and STAY FANATIC!!!

RADIO BROADCAST #405 01-01–17

Fanatic! We are starting in on the first possible day of the year. Hopefully, your holiday went well. I am back on the road with a few more weeks of shows.

I had about a week and a half back in Los Angeles. I used the time to try and get some listening in and I did. My goal, in the ten days I had, was to listen to 100 releases. I was able to check out 110.

Below you have all the tracks that we will check out on this show. We have prepared the first three shows of the year. I will be working on the rest of the January shows from backstage areas over the next few weeks.

2017 will be, at the very least, an interesting year. I think we better listen to a lot of music. We will be relentless as usual, serving it up as best we can, until we get canned. Please keep tuning in.

Greet the new year and STAY FANATIC!!!
