Fanatic! As I write this, I’m watching Iggy perform the songs from his recently released Free album. I’ve put in the site address below. It’s pretty cool. It’s a nice venue.
Good until Nov. 4, this is Iggy doing the Free album set.
I wanted to tell you about an amazing show I saw the other night. Patti Smith did a 5 song set at the Taschen bookstore in Beverly Hills. It’s easily one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It was less than half an hour but the impact was total. It was just her and a man who played piano, guitar and also supplied backing vocals. He sang great. Ms. Smith, it was like all of the accumulated wisdom of human history was dispensed. She’s coming from a completely unique place. The only thing I can compare it to was when I saw Leonard Cohen in NYC years ago. One of those shows where you keep forgetting to breathe.
In less than great news, Olivia Newton-John’s “people” if you will, have put a cease and desist order on one of our good pals and sonic allies, Anna Nasty, from using the name Olivia Neutron-John. Really? I wrote to media address on the Olivia Newton-John site expressing my disappointment. This is one of those moments you can learn from, Fanatic. While I’m willing to bet that this isn’t the doing of Ms. John, it is nonetheless punching down. Anna is in no way a threat to the reputation or livelihood of Ms. John. When Anna was here recently, she played in front of a small crowd, killed it and then went back to a table and sold her own merch. I don’t know what writing the media person at the site can do but I did. I’m not letting this go. Anna is a fantastic and unique artist.
Fanatic, the great Mr. Segs of Ruts and Ruts D.C. will be our guest in two weeks on the 27th.
Also: New Guerilla Toss release. It sounds great. I’ve got the tracks and we’ll start them soon.

On Sunday October 27, our good pal and sonic ally, Segs of the Ruts and Ruts D.C. will be our live in studio guest! I've already started bugging him about bringing tracks for us to listen to and I'll have plenty of questions to annoy him with. He's a great guy and I'm so happy that this is happening. We were visiting in London last August and he was hoping he'd be able to make this trip happen.
I’m looking forward to hearing what Mr. Segs brings in for us to listen to. There are tracks I’m bringing in so I can ask him too many fan boy questions. He’s used to this with me. Whenever I see him, the interrogation starts almost immediately.

The vinyl edition of Alex Cameron's new album Miami Memory is fantastic. There are a few color variants out there if that's your thing. The Boris reissues on Third Man are amazing as well. Thanks to Fanatic Denise for getting the tour editions for me at one of the band's recent shows.

I should tell you that we are also doing a show on KCRW Berlin on Friday nights 2100 hrs. to 2300 hrs. Berlin time, which would make for midday-afternoon listening if you're in North America. This link gets you there. It's a different show than the one we do on KCRW stateside. We're giving it a shot to see how it goes. It's a lot of work to do two shows a week, so we'll see how long I can hang in there.
As you know, Fanatic, we lost the great Daniel Johnston a few days ago. He was a singular talent. The first time I heard him was when he was still putting out cassette only releases. I believe Danny Don't Rap was the first song of his I heard. We have that track coming up later in the month.
I've been working away in the office for awhile today and so far, it's been all cassettes. Metabolist, Spykes and Wolf Eyes. So far, so great!

Fanatic! Our last show for August! September will be great for new records. Since it's on eBay for pre-sale, I can tell you about it here. Mr. Mike Patton never sleeps and has a new album coming out in mid-Sept. It's Mike & Jean-Claude Vannier, an album called Corpse Flower. I got a copy a few days ago and we will be starting it on our Sept. 15 show.
For our first hour, we have a great Punk Rock jam session. At the beginning of our second our, we will pay our last visit to Mr. Bogert and his frogs for the year.

Fanatic! Looks like everything is in place. We've got great sounding hi-res Oh Sees tracks ready to rock at 8 pm. We will be playing the new Oh Sees Face Stabber album in its entirety. It came out last Friday, so if you find yourself digging it extra immensely, you can find it right now.
To my knowledge, there's a few color variants. There's the two at the Castle Face site right now; the Blood In Your Eyeball and Blue Nebula, and in the UK, there was a small run of red and orange.
I have yet to hear this one on vinyl. Can't wait. Like all Oh Sees releases, it's the vinyl that really flat gets it.

While working away, I’ve been trying to listen to a lot of music. I’m really liking a band that Steph Hughes of Dick Diver and Stroppies note is in called the Blank Statements. Great LP.
Sweet Knives new double 7” is out. Alicja just sent me info.
It’s not for me to announce a band’s release before they do but I will say that a band we like a lot on the show has a great record coming out later in the year. I’ve heard it twice and it’s excellent. Can’t wait to get this one on the air.
The iguana is out of the bag on this one. Iggy’s new record Free is out in September. I’ve heard it a few times. Looking forward to getting that one on the show. We still have a few weeks to wait. Ugh!

Fanatic! If you're living in any part of the world that's enduring high temperatures, hopefully this show provides some relief. I just talked to Ian in DC and he says it's plenty hot but at the same time, it's just another summer day there. He also added that when we were young and on summer vacation from school, we did all the normal things but we did them slower.
Fanatic, if you look below, we have a bit of a concept going on in our second hour. I warned you that we were going to do something like this at least a couple of times this year. I was listening to the Kim Salmon album weeks ago, and it occurred to me that this would be perfect for a total immersion listening experience. I hope you like it. I listened to the album again last night.
You'll also see that we're listening to the Oh Sees Grave Blockers EP from start to finish. The reason is that for me at least, it's not a record that you can pull any single track from and to really appreciate it, we should just play the entire thing. A lot of Oh Sees this month, I know but hey, it's a Fanatic show. The EP reissue was rolled out very artistically. The first press run was clear with a green blob in the middle, then there was a run in green and one in clear. Hopefully, we'll get on that's green with a clear blob in the middle. It's a great record from start to finish and it's out on Castle Face Records right now.

Fanatic! If you’re stateside, I hope you had a good holiday weekend. It always goes too fast for me. I got a lot of music listened to. Right now, I’m listening to, yet again, the Peel Sessions of the Birthday Party. Two things here. This is perfect warm weather listening and the performances are incredible. Run do not walk to a vinyl version of this one. Beware of bootlegs.
We have a great show lined up for you. A bit of a concept happening in our second hour. I thought we should listen to the first album by The Fall from start to finish. You might have heard this one several times but I was so impressed by the sound quality of the new Cherry Red reissue, I thought we should listen to the whole thing. It’s one of the best first albums of any band I’ve ever heard. Their unique brilliance is so obvious on this one. I hope you enjoy this deep Fall immersion. I think warm weather is perfect for this kind of thing. I listened to this show all the way through yesterday to make sure I still liked it and I do, hopefully, you’ll dig it as well.

Fanatic. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, you’re quite aware that the heat has arrived. Last night was pretty cool out but today was hot and nothing compared to what’s coming. I just remembered that it will still be hot in October.
We have a great show lined up for you, Fanatic. A lot of new tunes!
As you might know, Dr. John passed away and so we’ll finish the show with one of his great tracks. As you also may know, Philomena Lynott, mother of Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott recently passed away. I was very lucky to have visited with her many times over the years. She always reminded me that she was my “Irish grandmother.” Next week, we’ll listen to some great Lizzy tracks, so get ready for that.
Did you get to any of the Kid Congo shows? I went to San Diego, LA and Long Beach. What a great band.
