The interview with James Spooner at Skirball last Sunday went well. The newly restored version of his excellent documentary, Afro-Punk was great. James’ new book, It Starts With Anger, is a really good read.

I’m in Kansas City today for a listening event for the Cramps Gravest Gravy album at a place called the Lystening Room. https://www.centerforrecordedmusic.org/listyningroom

I’m doing another one in Memphis in October at the Memphis Listening Lab. Both events are sold out.

I started noticing several days ago that even though it’s hot and humid day after day, leaves are starting to fall off the trees. I became curious as to why this would happen. Being a fan of seasonal change, I thought it might be September sneaking in to start showing August that it’s on the way out. Of course, there has to be a far more reality-based, less poetic reason, although I really do like the idea. After a few seconds of research, I found out that this is often what trees do as a means of survival. By shedding leaves, they don’t use as much water. I saw a phrase that was completely new to me: false autumn. The summer, where I am, has been plenty hot, but it’s also been noticeably dry, so maybe that’s what’s happening.

Fanatic, this is our last summer broadcast. A quick scan of the playlist will show you that we’re double dosing with Charles M. Bogert and his pack of loquacious amphibians. Also, a David Bowie track for each hour, both from his Lodger album. Such an interesting record. Of all his many amazing albums, it’s Lodger and Scary Monsters I have the most questions about. We’ve already started our programming for Fanatic autumn 2026 and will definitely be checking out some Scary Monsters tracks. It’s a great time of the year to listen to a lot of music. I find that I prefer the transitional months of the year to the ones that are peaking. I’m definitely looking forward to earlier sunsets and lower temperatures.

Yesterday, Lain, the man who runs the Radar615 Gallery and I put Alicja Trout’s collection on the walls for eight hours. We went at it nonstop. I learned a lot. It looks great. I was texting Alicja our progress and she likes the look of it. She will be showing up on Saturday. I will be there as well. It’s going to be a good time. If you’re in town, please come by.

Upcoming

Friday August 28 and Saturday August 29, Alicja Trout’s cool collection of posters, flyers and original artwork will be up for free viewing at

Radar615

516 Hagan Street, suite 100

Nashville TN 37203

https://www.radar615.com

The space will be open from 4 pm until 9 pm on both dates.

Also, get ready for another two day event Lain and I are doing at the gallery on November 6 and 7. When we get closer to the dates, I’ll supply you with more information. He and I have been working on this one for months. To say that we’re stoked, is an understatement.

We very much hope you’ll find this last Fanatic Summer 2026 broadcast to be a great soundtrack to start your weekend. Thanks to everyone who showed up at Skirball last week and thanks in advance for attending our very cool event at Radar615 this weekend. We will be back with you in September. Have a fantastic weekend and stay Fanatic.
