RADIO BROADCAST #910

09-11–26

Fanatic. I hope you had a great week. Over the last several weeks I’ve been giving listening time priority to 7” records. Now I’ve got a small stack of LPs I need to attend to. It’s going to be a good weekend of listening.

I don’t know if you’re aware of this Joy Division release set for later this month. It’s called Eternal: Live. This is the description from the New Order website:

14 CDs - Audio From 16 Live Performances, Sourced From Audience Cassettes, Soundboard Tapes, And Broadcast Recordings, All Mastered At Abbey Road Studios

2 DVDs - Over 2hrs 30mins Of Live Footage, Including The Plan K Brussels Concert, Two Apollo Theatre Manchester Concerts, A Soundcheck, And A New Edit Of Joy Division - A Malcolm Whitehead Film

1 X 16-Page Booklet - With Personal Notes By Simon Armitage And Photography By Anton Corbijn And Kevin Cummins

12” X 12” Lift-Off Lid Box - Artwork By Warren Jackson, Peter Saville, Howard Wakefield And Brett Wickens, With Cover Photography (Sirius Through A Defocused Telescope, 2023) By Wolfgang Tillmans

I have no inside information whatsoever, but I wonder if this box set is a reaction to the constant flow of Joy Division bootlegs on the Internet. It’s the same shows and demos, over and over, year after year. I’m guessing the box it will be a lot of these shows but maybe better sound quality and everything pitch corrected. I pre-ordered a copy. I’m very curious. There’s no way I wasn’t going to check it out. I’ll get tracks onto the show as soon as I can.

Every day, the temperature is past 90°, yet leaves are falling off the trees on my street. It’s autumn, but it’s not. I’ve been working on our September shows and have come up with a pretty good way to test them. Every night after I finished all my work, I walk for 1-3 hours. I use this time to think through things, take in the air and be outside. The frogs seemed to be done for the year, but the insects are hanging in there and they make a lot of noise. I listen to the tracks for our radio show while I’m walking. So far, I think we have a good September soundtrack for you.

I don’t know if you might have pre-ordered the new Dinosaur Jr. album There Near but mine arrived a couple of days ago. I’m going to listen to it over the weekend.

The new Bed Maker 7” on Dischord is really good.

I listened to an album called Spirits And Ancestors yesterday. It features our good pal and sonic ally Mark Cisneros, who you might remember from Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, and Hammered Hulls. On this recording, Mark is playing saxophone with drummer Nik Francis. I really like it. We’ll get tracks into the show in a few weeks. You can check it out on Bandcamp. https://markcisnerosmusic.bandcamp.com/album/spirits-and-ancestors

There’s a new Party Dozen album called 21 Bum Salute. It sets to release on November 6. Can’t wait to hear this one. There’s not one of their records. I don’t like.
