Fanatic! As I write this, I’m being cornered by the snarling beast that is the new High On Fire album Electric Messiah. I’m checking the white vinyl version. Good grief is Matt Pike and company consistent. Every HOF album is an absolute monster. Two nights ago, yet again I rocked the new one-sided Sleep 12” with Leagues Beneath. Fantastic. Also, Sleep/OM bassist Al Cisneros just did a two song 10” with the Melvins covering Black Sabbath and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. It being a Melvins related release, there were some amazing color variants which were gone immediately. I was able to get one and that’s it. Hopefully, they will make this record a little more available because it’s a great one.

Been off the road for almost two weeks. I’d rather be out there but the vinyl sessions have been quite good, so I’m not complaining all that much.

The new Boris/Novembers split 12” is great. I’m sure Fanatic Denise is all over that.

I pre ordered my copy of the new J Mascis Elastic Days album, so I have to wait until tomorrow to pick it up at the post office. Can’t wait to hear this one on vinyl. Could it be that Mr. J is coming to Los Angeles this Friday?! Indeed!

Fanatic! I got a few letters about last week's show, glad you liked it! I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

I'm back from the US leg of the Slideshow dates. Thank you for coming to the shows. It's difficult being off the road but there's a lot of records to check out, so I'm keeping busy with that.

I had a chance to listen to the new High On Fire album, Electric Messiah, thanks to Fanatic Denise who sent me the tracks. My LP copy is in a long column of mailers leaning against a wall in my office. I'll find it one of these days.

Getting out of October and into November, we're going to switch gears a little, as you'll see on our track list below.

Really digging the new GØGGS Pre Strike Sweep album. I think we're running low in tracks from it to play. I hope you've had a chance to check this one out. When Chris Shaw and Ty Segall get together, it's always great, so run, do not walk to this one.

Also, I've had the chance to listen to the new J Mascis album Elastic Days several times over the last few weeks and it's another great one from Mr. J. This one comes out on the 9th. That's this Friday! I preordered mine, so I'll have to wait as it crawls through the mail.

This new Ty record looks pretty cool.

Oh Sees @ The Teragram on 10-31-18 was furious! What a band! Joe has a great venue.

Ms. Molly Nilsson @ The Echo on 11-01-18 was excellent. The new songs, wow!

Fanatic! I hope October has been treating you well. I’ve been doing show after show and all is well. I’ve been getting in all the listening I can at the gym and before shows. I’ve been listening to a lot of Fall albums, which is always a good thing.

In our first hour, we have a fantastic batch of tracks that I think comport very much with the mood of the month.

For our second hour, I thought we would do something interesting for our last October show. I came across this cool Damned set list from 04-19-81.

I thought it would be cool if we played the set list but used alternate versions of the tracks to make it interesting. After the set list concludes, we encore with some other Damned tracks. Fanatic, we’re trying to keep the show as crafted as we possibly can. You deserve nothing less!

Fanatic! I’m sitting on the bus, about to head into the Aladdin Theater here in Portland. I’ve got two shows today. One at 1500 hrs. and one at 2000 hrs. It’s going to be a long day, to say the least.

They sound great and are easy to find.

I’ve been getting a fair amount of listening done pre show every evening. I keep starting with the An Ideal For Living EP by Joy Division and go on from there. For the last few nights I’ve been listening to Perverted By Language by The Fall.

Fanatic! Sitting in the only restaurant I could find open in this part of Albuquerque, NM. It’s Saturday night and for some reason I have no show. It wasn’t a lack of trying. The hotel restaurant is full of alcohol fueled voices. Luckily, I saw this place and some food is on the way.

The shows have been going great. Last night, Al from Sleep was at the show. Great to finally meet him. Great guy. What a band!

Have you heard the new Guerilla Toss album? Really good. I haven’t had the chance to check out the vinyl as yet but I’ve listened to the download a few times now and the more I play it, the more I like it. Another great one from them.

Fanatic! I don’t know about you but this month has been going by fast. I hope you’re getting in as much listening as possible. For the last few nights I’ve been playing a Fall LP starting with Witch Trials and going chronologically. It’s 09-15-18 and I’m at the end of a UK test pressing of Grotesque.

Very happy that this is out, the Stimulators Loud Fast Rules single, now an EP, reissued by the great Frontier Records, owned and operated by our pal and sonic ally, Lisa Fancher. It came out sounding great and thanks to Jack Rabid, there’s an extra track on the record.

Cool that we’re playing the Damned on this show, especially a track from Music For Pleasure. I’m now listening to the Drastic Plastic color vinyl reissue and it sounds great. DP really rocked the Damned and Cramps catalogs. If you want new pressings of early Damned, the Drastic Plastic reissues are a perfect go to.

Did you see that the Voice Of Love album by Julee Cruise finally came out on LP?! Nice!!! I got a copy at Amoeba a few days. Sounds good.

Did you hear the new Boris record Phenomenons Drive? Limited edition 600 on clear vinyl. Sounds great. Boris makes records that sell out in a minute so you might want to get on their mailing list to get the heads up. I wrote Fanatic Denise about it last night because I knew she was on the case. She had it. I went on Discogs and there was 2 for way too much money. I think there are some Japan mail order places that might have it. It was one of their more blink-and-you-missed-it records.

I’m starting a bunch of dates in USA on Monday , so I’m trying to get in all the analog listening in I can. I’ll be in a digital environment for the next few weeks.

Fanatic! How's September treating you? I just jumped out of the set of Deadly Class yesterday and will soon be hitting the road.
 
Last night, I listened to the new Escape-Ism LP The Lost Record. Great!
 
Right now, I'm listening to the tracks for this show. I think we have yet again hit sonic pay dirt.
 
There's a new Slim Gaillard 2CD set that was just released last week called Groove Juice: The Norman Granz Recordings. We'll get tracks into the show as soon as I can get a copy. Looks interesting, with a lot of alt takes on CD2. Slim's son wrote me about it recently. Vout!
 
My new book, Before The Chop IV is back from the printer and will be on my American tour dates that start next week. We will be selling it on the US tour dates exclusively. All copies will be signed by me.  Remaining copies will go to the site mail order in early November.

Fanatic! Wow! It’s September! I know that it’s not fall on the calendar for several days but for me, it started yesterday. I did my best to get the last of my summer listening done in the last few days as I transition into autumn listening.
 
A lot to look forward to release wise. It’s not for me to steal anyone’s thunder but I will say that there are some fantastic records still to come this year and some great ones for next year. You know that as soon as get the green light from the labels, we will get them to you.
 
As you know, we program the show seasonally. At the beginning of every September, I look back over the summer to see if I got enough listening done. Last year, I let myself down a little but I think I made for it this time around. For June, July and August, I’m showing 313 records played. It might be a few more as sometimes I forget to write them down but most of the time, I do.
 
I’ve got a lot of shows coming up that will take me to almost the end of the year, so I may lose some traction on getting new titles heard but I’ll do my best from backstages all over. If you want tour date information, it’s here.
 
My new book Before The Chop IV is back from the printer and ready to go. We will be selling it on the US tour dates exclusively. Remaining copies will go to the site mail order in early November. All copies will be signed by me. My next book is at the proofreader, prepping it for 2019 release as soon as we can turn it around.

Fanatic! I know that Autumn doesn’t start for about three weeks but for me, it’s September first, which would make this our last show for the summer. In Los Angeles, it’s going to be hot for weeks to come, so this show might not exactly be the soundtrack for one season giving way to another but for me, August is one thing and September is quite another.
 
I listened to the new Escape-Ism album yet again earlier today. If you liked that last one, then you’re going to like this one as well. If you have neither record, you can get both and have an amazing weekend.
 
I’m in Washington DC this weekend. I was at Dischord House yesterday and Ian gets on the phone with someone. At one point he says, “Hey, someone wants to talk with you” and hands me the phone. It was Robo from Black Flag. I don’t think I’ve spoken with him for 35 years. He sounded good.

Fanatic! I don’t know where you are right now but it’s hot where I am. Los Angeles is cooking. I’m just glad that it’s below 90 degrees.
 
Fanatic, it’s been somewhat of a “thing” on this show, to once a year, in the month of August, to have a show that’s extremely Punk Rock oriented. We get letters asking if it’s going to happen and I’m happy to confirm that indeed, it’s happening and tonight is the night. Below, you will see a cornucopia of Punk tunes. I think it’s going to be a great one.
 
I will be live and for free playing music at the KCRW Summer Nights event next Saturday night. I will be on for 90 minutes, 8:30 to 10:00 PM. The show is ready, I think it’s going to be a good one. Prepare to have your heart rate elevated.

Fanatic! From the roasting urban sprawl of Los Angeles, hello.
 
I don’t know if you were at Zebulon the last two nights for the Keiji Haino / Peter Brötzmann duo shows. I got my tickets in February. I was going to do my best not to miss these shows. The first night was really good, last night was fantastic. It was as if on the second night, Haino was making a soundtrack for Brötzmann to work in and the results were incredible. So glad I was able to see them play. I had been looking forward to these shows since I got the tickets.
 
Tonight, a great show, with a cool second hour. You might have heard about the new Coltrane album of unreleased tracks from 1963 called Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album. Well, Fanatic, we’re going to listen to the whole thing. It’s excellent and I think it’s a perfect bit of August listening for us.

Fanatic! In an air plane, 8h 11m into a 13h flight from Sydney Australia to Los Angeles. I flew all the way to Australia for a show and of course, some record store action.
 
Due to jet lag and the blur of activity, as I sit here, I’m unable to remember a single title of what I got at Strangeworld in Melbourne. All I can say is that it sounded good at the time and I’ll know more when I get a chance to get the vinyl spinning.
 
As you probably know, Australia is in its winter, so the nights were quite cool. So strange to leave the blazing desert heat of Los Angeles to exit the plane into such a different climate. It’s currently Sunday, 1745 hrs. in Sydney. If all goes according to plan, I should be back in LA by 0600 hrs. Sunday.
 
I think besides a three day stop to do some press on my way back from Japan years ago, this five day and a few hours trip might be the shortest one I’ve made to Australia. It was a long way to go for a single show but it was worth it. Australian jet lag will make this coming week interesting as far as sleep cycle but I should be able to even out in a few days.
 
Remember how I’ve been telling you that there’s a lot of great records coming out in the next few months but it’s not for me to be breaking the news? Well, there’s yet another great one that’s coming out that I’ve just been sent the advance on. I’ve been plugging in tracks from it into our upcoming October shows.

Fanatic! Watching in real time as the kids are getting pulled out of the cave in Thailand. Hopefully by show time, there will be even more good news.
 
Hot weather listening! A couple of nights ago, when it was over 100F, even at night, I felt like I was baking in an oven. Over this whole weekend, I think I’ve slept about 8 hours total.
 
I listened to a different Minor Threat bootleg LP for the last three nights running. What a band.
